My DS just received a 3 Year AD scholarship (Citadel and Univ of Wisc). He enlisted in the WI ARNG in October 2013 and is shipping to 11B OSUT in July 2013 and Graduates in Nov 2013. He is planning to start college somewhere January 2014. Can this scholarship trump his enlistment contract with the ARNG? What are his options? He is also accepted and considering the Univ of North Georgia.

I'm fairly certain if he's already enlisted into RSP, he is technically in the Guard and has a commitment to them. Since he's made that commitment, he should go through with it and try to contract with ROTC and be SMP when he's a sophomore/junior.

If he applied for the AROTC scholarship, he made the choice to enlist knowing he might possibly get the scholarship anyway.

The scholarship would go away if he remains enlisted. Since he has not shipped yet he needs to contact the ROO at the school he plans to attend. There are ways to stop the enlistment process if he decides he wants the scholarship, if wants to continue with enlistment he would simply decline the scholarship at this time.

The only problem is, if you enlist active duty and get a scholarship, you can drop out of DEP no problem. But with the Guard in RSP, you're collecting a paycheck as part of the Guard. So you might have to get discharged.

Good point, that's why he would need to talk to the ROO soon as well as his NG unit.

Have you been drilling with the unit and collecting a paycheck.

Beautiful Fort Benning in July.... Enjoy! You had better drink LOTS of water every day starting in April (if not earlier) and not stopping until Christmas.

I was wondering if you just received it today? Are they still notifying people?

Assuming you mean he'd be starting school Jan 2015? Shipping to 11B in July 2014, graduating in Nov. 2014?
