As I understand it, at the Naval Academy, you must be medically qualified BEFORE receiving an appointment, is this correct? I know at CGA, they offer appointments, then check medical status in April sometime.

Also, my school ends its first semester late January. Would it be better to just send my transcript with first quarter grades now, or should I just wait until the semester ends?

This is my first post! Thanks to anybody who responds.

Correct ...@ USNA one does not become eligible to compete for an appointment until 3Qed ...Scholastically (grades, rank, SATs (especially math),ECs), physically (CFA), medically ...Then one becomes eligible to compete. And then the nomination becomes valuable. It is worthless, absent being 3Qed.

I believe you can wait until your semester ends before sending further grades.

Ditto what WhistlePig said. As for grades, quite honestly, USNA isn't going to care about first quarter grades or really even your 2nd semester grades (unless you have an appointment and decide to fail every class). A quarter of a semester isn't enough to go on and, at this point, your packet is essentially set -- grade-wise at least.

If you earn some new honor, you should send that along.

    Incorrect.

No academy can offer an appointment without a candidate being medically qualified or "waivered." USCGA does NOT offer full appointments to any candidate who is not medically qualified.

EVERY academy, USNA included, can offer a conditional appointment. At USCGA, they will offer a conditional appointment under their EA program, but it does not become a full appointment unless the candidate is medically, physically, and scholastically qualified.

Same with USNA. They can offer a LOA, which is the exact same thing as what USCGA calls a "conditional" appointment. The LOA can be contingent on the successful passing (or waiver) of DODMERB, passing the CFA, or obtaining a valid nomination.

I think its quiet for most candidates right now, if that makes you feel any better! My son is 3 Q'd w/2 noms and we haven't heard anything for a while! I think we all just need to hang in there! ( if it doesn't give us a heart attack first!! )

Hang in there - you are not alone...we have twins who have applied to USNA and USMA. Identical grades, identical extracurricular but one had a slightly higher math SAT....higher math SAT got a LOA to West Point and 2 nominations and an appointment - the other is 3q'd with a MOC nom waiting for word from Annapolis....
Is there any way to find out their status /Where they are on the "list" or ballpark timeframe when they will hear???
We anticipate responses from other schools in Feb....thoughts?
    Thanks!

Congrats muhs ... you've a double-dose of great blessing in the form of young patriots.

Simple answer to your questions: No and no.

Never will your candidates learn where they are on the "list," there status beyond what you know. The ballpark timeframe will be between now and April, or even as late as the day prior to I Day. Honestly.
