A-Day

Does anybody know how far the cadets can travel off post on A Day ? Local hotels are limited and almost bookded and Id like to stay in a nice hotel about 20 minute ride from post. Would this be a problem to bring my DS there for a relaxing day there ?

In the past, "walking privileges" are expanded on A Day. You should be fine w/ 20 miles, but the exact parameters will not be announced until later.

I see in the past that walking provildeges have been extended to 75miles...very generous. You may or may not know this one, is that 75miles measured by car odometer or 75 miles on a radius map with USMA Admissions Offcie being the center ? My home is 83 miles by car odometer but well within 75mile radius.

Fishkill and even Poughkeepsie are popular options just due to variety of restaurants, movie theaters, etc. A bit farther, 30 minutes? But we always found it well worth it due to flexibility.

Not too many options any closer than that other than highland falls or Ft Montgomery. From there you jump to Newberg, Fishkill, or central valley. Nanuet & Mahweh can work in a jam, but are farther yet and in NJ.

The last 2-3 A-day guidelines were very reasonable. Pretty much about as far as you'd want to spend driving twice a day with your cadet.

I think c/o 2012 was the last one that couldn't leave the HF area.

For those of you wondering, walking privileges and many other things were just posted in the 2nd admissible packet.

Walking privileges

Walking Privileges After the Acceptance Day Parade on August 16th, 2014 cadets in good standing have walking privileges for the weekend upon completion of all duties. On normal week- ends, cadets may take walking privileges on Saturdays after their last duty until 11 p.m. and Sundays from 5:20 a.m. to 7 p.m. More guidance regarding privileges for this special weekend will be published during the summer. As is the case in any explanation of cadet regulations, these are general guidelines that are subject to an individual cadet’s circumstances. It is the cadet’s responsibility to know the regulations and how to apply them to each particular case. Parameters of Walking Privileges To the North: Washington Gate. To the East: The westerly bank of the Hudson River. To the West: The easterly side of Route 9W, with the exception that cadets traveling in privately owned vehicles are permitted to ride down the westerly side of Route 9W to access an establishment on the easterly side of Route 9W. To the South: To the Bear Mountain Bridge Circle. Cadets traveling in privately owned vehicles may travel to Bear Mountain State Park.

Does this mean I can't take my cadet to hotel in Fishkill after he is released for the day ?

" More guidance regarding privileges for this special weekend will be published during the summer."

Past years there's been a memo outlining special guidelines for a-day weekend. It's been quite reasonable, and there have been no indications of change.

Things can (and do) change, but I'd not give up your fdishkill room yet. :)

West Point has many official means to communicate information to parents, especially when it comes to special weekends like A Day. Your first bookmark needs to be the parent information page: http://www.usma.edu/Parents/SitePages/Home.aspx. Next should be the West Point Parents facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WestPointParents. There are many fairly reliable unofficial sources as well....including this page and the West Point Moms facebook page. If you join West Point Moms, you will be sent a private message to confirm your cadet's name and class year. You will not be admitted to the group until you respond to the message. :thumb:

ACCEPTANCE DAY FAQs

Reading the FAQs, its states:

6. Where can my cadet travel during Acceptance Day weekend?
Cadets may accompany family to their hotel (up to 75 miles away) during the hours of walking privileges but must observe the following restrictions:
b. Cadets accompanied by parents may enjoy Off Post Privileges. OPPs entitles the cadets to travel up to 75 miles from West Point to include visiting NYC. They may attend movies, visit malls, dine at a restaurant of their choice, etc. Cadets (plebes) will be briefed on the allowances for OPPs. Keep in mind they are often tired and may want to relax at the hotel with family and enjoy visiting a restaurant for a special lunch or dinner.

**This applies to both Saturday and Sunday correct? Of course, dropping off on Saturday and picking up again on Sunday.

Just confirming. All comments are welcome. Thanks in advance.

A-Day....

Yes both days. In the past, and my times may be dated, you could pick up your Plebe at 7:00 am and return 11:00 pm On Sunday they were released at 7:00 am and had to return by 9:00 pm. (again class of 2018 may have different restrictions). No alcohol (including wine with dinner or sharing a beer as a family or rec drugs)

Their TACs will inform them

A-Day is a great experience for the family. Many families will have picnics just behind the Plain. You may want to plan for that

Don't plan on keeping your Plebe out until 9 on that Sunday either...

They are going to want to get back to their rooms so they can prep for Monday.

If you wait too late on Sunday night to return your cadet, you run the risk of being stuck in the security line to get back on post. You do NOT want a frantic plebe in your car!

Dixieland is right... and consensus is that most plebes start getting anxious about getting back.

I know we found this to be the case even as yuk & 1st semester cow.... I've decided some of this is getting their 'game face' on. Just getting back into cadet mode.

Just prepare to be flexible. Your cadet will know. Companies can have their own report times, and it's not been unknown for an individual cadet to have to report back early. Or a BBQ after A-day parade, etc.

You are there for the cadet, and just go with the flow!

This cannot be overstated.

if they haven't been released by their company/ regiment, thee is no need to add stress to the mix by sitting there chomping at the bit for them to go. There's not a thing your cadet can do about it.

Enjoy the time with them and roll with the flow( lol)
