Why is it necessary to wait for 50 % of application to be done and then receive a letter through the mail before you can have the DODMERB exam? My husband has scheduled the DoDMERB at our MTF on base where he works, but looking more into it, it seems that we should not have the exam done until my son gets the letter in the mail. Can anyone explain?

You schedule the exam when you either get a letter in the mail or your candidate portal instructs you to. My DS got a letter in the mail for one academy and we scheduled the exam using that. Essentially the letter instructs you to log onto a website and enter scheduling information. So making an appointment before receiving notification is premature, because DODMETS does not have your name in the system yet. After my son had his physical, the other academy he is applying for put a notification on his portal to log onto the website. You only need one physical, so he was good. The government does not want to schedule physicals unless they are sure the candidate is serious. Application completion is an indication to them how serious the candidate is. Many start the process but never finish.

Also, they'll tell you where you will go to have the physical.

    kinnem,

Military members can ask for their exam to be done on base/post. They just call them and say I am a military dependent can I change it from civilian to military doc. Our DS was told to go to 1 of 3 civilians, but we just called and said we are military. They said go on base.
~ Funny story and an example how small the military world is in reality. Bullet was a flier and we had a flight doc. DoDMERB allowed DS to go to our flight doc for the exam at Seymour Johnson AFB. 4 yrs later when he had to take his FAA FC1 flight physical at Wright Pat as a cadet the final flight doc (chief flight surgeon there) to review his records. Looks at him, and says are you Bullet's DS? He answers, yes sir, without recognizing the doc. The doc laughs and says I gave you your DoDMERB exam back at Seymour 4 years ago!

    OP,
Even though you are military and will be using a military doc, the majority of candidates are not. DoDMERB will charge that service for the civilian doc. It comes out of that branches budget.

Years ago, before sequestration occurred, SA and ROTC candidates would get their physical done very early on in the process. Our DS became a candidate for USAFA in the end of June, and had his DoDMERB done by mid-July.
~ He had it done before the essays or CFAs were submitted.

Than they slowed down the process.
~ SAs now play the "chicken game". They know many apply to multiple SAs, so they wait it out to see if someone requests it first.
~~ If USAFA orders it 1st, than they pick up the tab, and everyone else gets to use the results.
~ ROTC now waits until the scholarship is awarded before ordering the exam. It use to be that they would order it prior to boarding. If the candidate applied and had the exam due to their SA application, than it still is the same. ROTC will just use that exam.
