ACT SCORE

It depends....Maybe one of those 29 kids is an excellent leader, faced adversity at a small, poor rural school or inner city school and excelled in all other areas including athletics whereas the 35 kid attended a private school and is just smart. Based on total picture, I'd take the 29 kid all day, but surely a congressional board member would see that as well.
I could see everything and they were similar in other aspects than ACT. My point to the OP is not to settle on a 30 ACT thinking that will get them in. All that it takes is one person that is fantastic and you don't receive the appointment.

28 ACT and 1320 SAT is average for the USAFA. The USAFA has the highest average scores of all five service academies. I always tell my CAP cadets to get at least those scores or higher. After you score at least that or higher you then try to shine in the other two major categories- athletics and leadership.

Where are you coming up with the 28 ACT average for USAFA? Is this published somewhere? The only thing I can find is the mid 50% range which is well over 28.

I have found the averages for the ACT section along with SAT section averages on the class profiles and US News & World Report but they are all higher than quoted above so I'd like to know where those numbers came from as well.

To the OP: A 30 is a good score but it is not an amazing score in the SA world. My ds started at a 30 and we were thrilled because it put him in range but knew he had more in the tank. I do think that at least a 30 on the math portion should be a goal. DS#2, who is applying for the class of 2028) opened with a higher score than his brother got admitted with but he is still trying to get it higher. He does not want to leave points on the table.

I have a 35 on the ACT and I've taken it twice...should I try SAT? C/o 2028

If you were my kid, I'd save my money. 35 is GREAT! That is a 1560-1590 on the SAT according to the Princeton Review. Is there anything else you could work on instead? CFA, ECAs, leadership, sports?

Sorry we have a chart here at CAP (Civil Air Patrol) for all the service academies averages. I was looking at the ACT for USMMA average which is between 27-28. The USAFA is 31. The average SAT for the USAFA is 1320. My apologies.

My 2 cents: Not disqualifying but competitiveness unknown.

The stats are interesting but the only thing that matters is how competitve you against THIS year's candidates on YOUR slates, which could look NOTHING like last year or any average past years.

It's probably best to ask your ALO/BGO/FFR, admissions partners - they know YOUR region!

I attached pdfs of 2025 and 2026 information; they are floating around in other threads as well.

The ACT has been researched to be nothing but an entrance exam. It has nothing to do with college retention. It is however an eliminator in many cases to many students who lack access to ACT prep. Throw Covid/home instruction on top of the equation, I’d be willing to bet that ACT composite scores are all over the place.

Thank you! I definitely need to increase pullups drastically, and maintain/increase for the other events. As for sports lax is starting up in two weeks, and I play hockey and run XC. I think I am doing ok so far for ECs and leadership, but keep working at it!

I think the ACTs and SATs provide a useful tool for the academies to compare candidates from different schools.

With grade inflation and other problems comparing GPAs it can help imo.

35 is awesome. Congrats.

As someone who homeschools, I like having the SAT/ACT. It is one of the tools my boys can use to prove to colleges that they are ready for college classes and gives colleges a way to compare them to other high school students.

You learn something every day.

I thought USNA and West Point had higher scores.
USAFA and USNA are pretty close. USMA has a slightly lower average. Our MOC stated that they would take that into account for noms and encouraged applicants to change their preferences accordingly.
