So I used to be active on this board when my two oldest sons were in ROTC at Alabama. They have graduated, commissioned, and are living at Ft Benning and Ft Bliss!

Now our youngest son is ready to apply for the ROTC scholarship. Have there been any significant changes that we should be aware of in the last five years or so?

I'm concerned that he has not been able to take the ACT recently due to the virus restrictions. He only has a 29 from when he took it his first semester of his junior year. The April, June, and now July tests have been cancelled. I'm trying to decide if it would be better to wait to see if he can retake the Sept or October test before submitting his scholarship app in time for the first board. Both of our other sons were boarded in time for the second board and received 4 years from that board.

Thanks!

Which ROTC branch are you referring to?

Not that I know of. I know that you need a minimum ACT score of 26 to apply for the AFROTC scholarship, and the higher the score you have, the more competitive you are.

Try to get the highest score possible- it will only help you. As for submitting it before the first board, there are other boards afterward. In my opinion, it would be better to take the ACT again then submit very early on. Then again, it's by a case-by-case basis. Just my two cents.

Also, I've had friends that were able to take the ACT even with coronavirus, but I've also had other friends have their test cancelled since the location their testing center was in had more restrictions placed. It's a gamble.

Welcome back! 29 is going to be a good score this year. My DS had a 30 and got a 4 YR on the 1st board last year. 30 and above would be ideal, but this year is a different deal since most rising seniors only have 1 or 2 test scores. I am assuming you are talking AROTC. Best of luck to your DS.

Advice from several wise heads seems to be to put together the best package since you are only boarded once and it can’t be improved after that.

Thank you all. Yes, he will be applying for the Army ROTC scholarship. (In our family, there's only one branch of the military ;)) He is planning on retaking the ACT. He is just frustrated that the last three times he's been signed up, ACT has cancelled. He is a strong student, with over a 4.5 GPA. He's taken dual enrollment classes and done well, including Cal I and Cal II. By the time he applies, he will have Cal III and be enrolled in Diff Eq. If he can't retake because of virus restrictions, he's hoping his 29 coupled with his GPA will demonstrate that he is scholarship material.

Based on the advice, he will plan to make the second board. His two brothers applied in December and were boarded in time for #2. They both got four-year scholarships.

Thanks again!

Our son was boarded and awarded a 4 year Army scholarship in December with very high stats. More importantly, I think that many more scholarships are awarded on the second board. I, also, have several more sons (and daughters) to send to college.

My daughter received a 4-year AROTC scholarship on the first board last year (2019) with a 28. The ACT was by far her weakest element so it really depends on how the rest of his application looks. Good luck!
