Wondering on likelihood of waiver -

Son was "diagnosed" by his pediatrician mid 8th grade year (he was 13 - August birthday). No formal testing was done, no IEP or education plan ever used, but medication was recommended based on conversation. Medication was taken during the school week/year for the remainder of 8th (covid), 9th (covid), and 10th. Medication was never taken during the summer/ weekends/ vacations. End of 10th grade, medication was stopped. Grades have remained high, all standardized tests were taken without accommodations or medication. It has been 16 months since he last used any meds...

I'm seeing confusing information -
He never had an IEP, so should be fine there.
He did take medication after his 14th birthday, but not for 24 months after his 14th birthday (this seems to be worded differently in different places)
no comorbidities

Thoughts on likelihood of getting a waiver or best way to go about this? If he gets awarded a scholarship, does he go to DODMERB with a letter from the prescribing doctor? Guidance counselor at school? He is really hoping to go this route and I am hoping that there is a path through this.

Thanks!

It seems you are talking about a ROTC scholarship, atleast I will assume until corrected if not. If he is awarded a scholarship, he will eventually have to go through DODMERB for qualification. DODMERB will see the ADHD and likely show as disqualified. It will then be up to the ROTC to decide on a waiver or not(this is where the letter from prescribing doctor could help). Every applicant is different, so no one can really say for sure if he would get a waiver or not on this forum. ADHD will likely be a uphill climb for a waiver if he was taking medications for a few years. It does look like he was off of them for about two years after though which will help his case.

All you can really do is keep pushing forward in the application process and see what happens if he is awarded a scholarship. Be prepared for the possiblity of not qualifying, and have a plan B.

Your DS will get DQ’ed from DoDMERB for taking meds in the previous 24 months.

Very good chance for waiver from AROTC. He’ll probably need to provide a note from the HS counselor stating if he has/hasn’t used IEP since 20xx. Will probably need to provide HS transcripts and pharmacy records since 8th grade.

Depending on the SA or ROTC, you have to be off meds and no accommodations for 12-24 months with no significant decrement in academic performance for favorable waiver consideration. I believe AROTC goes with 12 months, so your DS should be good.

Already good comments. Adding: don’t circumvent including all pertinent info in his medical history/questionnaire. Not saying he would, but more a general statement to all.

There is a process to work through for DQ’s and potential waivers. Don’t be afraid of a DQ. Have your records and such all buttoned up and any outstanding issues, resolved. Then work through the process.

Going through this with DD, albeit not exactly apples to apples. Waiting on waiver request from USMA - has LOA and application is complete - and working on finishing USNA application. Maybe halfway through USAFA application (waiting on counselor to complete school info, etc.), but they requested waiver review last week. Waiting to hear whatever AMI they need.

Wondering what sort of AMI they ended up requesting? My son was awarded AROTC in the first board - couldn't get his medical scheduled until December (that was the first available appointment). Would like to have as much of the requested info already together to speed up the process as much as possible. Tried to get some of the prescription records from Walgreens online but nothing is showing up in their system so will need to do a full request which can take a month or more for them to respond to.

I did a pharmacy request at CVS, call Walgreens, I’m sure you can get it soonest talking to a live person on records. They can email you the same day. Good luck!

I had a hard time getting old prescription records from Walgreens, like you, they said, I had to wait a month and it just seemed complicated. I called the insurance company and they were able to give me a print out.

Requested 3 years of pharmacy records, all medical records related to treatment, and letter from counselor.
