I am from california. I am a jr. in high school and am wondering about any tips you guys have and a timeline of when i should begin applying for the nomination and to USNA. I am in the 22nd district. Also what classes should i take sr. year.

Start applying NOW...the Preliminary App for Class of 2015 has already opened...your just on time. Once you have done this, you can begin your application process for nominations. The deadlines for most nom apps is fall of your senior year, and you'll hear back "soon" after. Somewhere in between then you'll fill forms, take the CFA, and have a DoDMERB medical exam. If you are qualified fully (nom, app, and medical), your app will go before the board and an appointment decision will come back by or before May 1 of your senior year.

As for classes, take the hardest classes you think you can handle...the Naval Academy likes a rigorous class schedule. But don't forget also about the physical and leadership portions also. Try to make these as strong as possible.

Finally, don't forget to have a Plan B (ROTC, for example), in case you don't get accepted.

Saw that you changed your username. Good man.

Did you apply to summer seminar? If not, try and get out and visit the Academy some time before/during your senior year.

(1) Nominations: Each senator/congressman has different requirements for applying for a nomination and deadlines. You can find out information about nominations on your senator's and your congressman's webpages.

I see that your congressman is Kevin McCarthy: http://kevinmccarthy.house.gov/showpage.asp?ID=86

Your Senator's are: Barbara Boxer: http://boxer.senate.gov/en/services/academy/index.cfm

Feinstein: http://feinstein.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Applications.ServiceAcademyNominations

(2) Candidate Fitness Assessment: Start practicing for this NOW. And by practice, I mean looking at the event orders and running through practice runs. If you do that, you will be able to ace it when you take it for real

(3) Blue and Gold Officer: Find out who they are early. This way, you can schedule an interview and contact them before they contact you, which looks much better to them

(4) Teacher Recommendations: You need letters of recommendation/evaluations from a math teacher and an English teacher. Ask your teachers BEFORE school ends. That way, they will already have them typed up and they will be aware that they will need to submit them electronically.

(5) DoDMERB/Medical: You want to get this done ASAP so you can deal with any waivers early on, because the system gets filled fast. My suggestion would be to apply for NROTC or Army ROTC because they will send this information faster than the Academies will

(6) Academics: Not sure where you stand here. You'll have to fill me in on your GPA, classes you take, and your test scores

(7) Sports/EC's: Two words here: INVOLVEMENT and LEADERSHIP. The Academy isn't looking for someone who is a member of every school club. What they want are people who are only involved in a few things and have leadership positions in those things. It's about DEPTH, not the WIDTH of your activities.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

My gpa is a 3.5 with honors classes and ap. i will be retaking a few of my less than acceptable classes this summer. i have applied for nass but i fell my chances are slim because i am late and had low test scores. i am retaking the sat and act and am feeling much more prepared.

Community Involvement

Don't focus too much on your academics...the 3-legged stool to be accepted into any SA:

1. SCHOLASTIC
2. MEDICAL
3. PHYSICAL (CFA)

The scholastic part in not just academics...it has it's own 3-legged stool:

1. ACADEMICS
2. LEADERSHIP
3. COMMUNITY

IMHO the COMMUNITY portion often gets overlooked...get involved, volunteer your time and talents, help or even better lead a community service project, get other kids and even adults into the spirit of helping out in the community...get out there...keep it real! :thumb:

Just to let you know, there will be an Admission Forum in Alameda on Saturday, March 20. This is worth a few hours of drive from where you live. If you go to the USNA website and click on the program and events, you will find all the information pertaining to this event.

Where is Alameda? Im in Monterey, if im close enough, id be interested in going

I have an eagle scout and almoset two hundred hours of logged cs all of which i have lead. my SAT and ACT will probably be a 26-28 and a 1700-1890. I ahve tons of leadership in and out of school. ANything else

Community Service

When they ask about community service, do they want it logged? Because for the past 3 years I have done approximately 10+ hours a week at just one organization. I also do community service for a couple other groups I belong to. As far as I know however, these hours aren't logged. I also do some work with my JROTC group, those are logged however the leadership involved isn't.

Where is Alameda?

Alameda's about two hours north of Monterey, just south of San Francisco. I bet the meeting is on or near the USS Hornet, where my Mid has attended a few USNA events. The island of Alameda was once home to a major Naval Air Station, but it was closed in the early 90's when the number of US military bases were reduced.
