Hey! I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or tips for SLS. And, are there very many girls as SLS (sorry if this has been asked before).

Be in good shape when you go, ace the CFA and be done with it early. Be prepared for an interview; why you want to go to the academy, etc. Really try to see if what they show you is how you would want to spend the next four years of your life.

Female candidates at SLS

My daughter attended last summer and had a great experience! She also attended Summer Seminar at the Air Force Academy. She received nominations and appointments to both. It has been a hard decision but she has decided to attend the Air Force Academy -- she could just as well have decided to go to USMA -- either would be a superior education/opportunities,careers, etc. The percentage of males to females last summer in her group at USMA was 2 females and 10 males -- at USAFA it was 4 females and 6 males in her group -- the numbers varied by group at both locations but are generally representative of the overall distributions last summer. My daughter had a great room mate from California, who she is still in touch with on a weekly basis and who (I think) will be going to USMA this fall. Her group was very accepting of females and my daughter felt that she got a good feel for what attending USMA would be like as a female cadet. My daughter did not do well on the CFA during SLS (she had just come from the week at USAFA and the physical tests there) but she came home, trained hard and retook the CFA in October -- leading to fairly immediate LOA from both USMA and USAFA -- in other words, it is great if your son/daughter can Ace the CFA at SLS -- but not the end of the world if they do not. The weather (heat and humidity) were a bit of challenge as we live in a cooler location, but otherwise it was a great experience and not to be missed for those who get a chance to attend (parent from Colorado).

For me SLS was one of the best weeks I've had in my life. I live 45 minutes from the academy so I had been there before, but spending an entire week I really can't even describe how cool and amazing it was. I feel that the cadre was honest and simulated life there as best as they could. I had alot of fun and still keep in touch with the people I met. I'm not sure if you experince it but if I talk about west point and the army around my friends they get tired of it. Being surrounded by people who like west point as much as me was cool too. I fell even more in love with west point and even more importantly the army. My advice would to be prepared for the cfa I wish I would have taken that advice a little more seriously. I would bring short because it was over 100 last summer, odd for NY at that time but hey that's my luck. Also be prepared for the interview and take advantage of it, I mean how many of your friends will have thier official college interview in barracks. I was in my pt uniform sitting on a bed. Just listen and ask questions. The first day was really fun they set it up like r-day with issue and stuff. O don't bother bringing anything but what's on the packing list you won't need it. I brought way too much, a duffle bag is easier! I regret brining soo much. Have fun, speak up, and take advantage of the oppurtunity you are being given, no other college offers this great of an experince. GOOD LUCK, wish I could do it again. GO ARMY!!!

Preparation For SLS...

Folks,

SLS is a superb program. My advice is to take advantage of the opportunity and pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) which will be offered the second morning of your stay.

This is NOT the sort of PT test you're used to. It's timed and contains some unique events that often look much easier than they truly are. Numerous candidates show up for SLS and fail the assessment when they had every opportunity to prepare, but failed to do so. It's not too late to begin practicing now so as to pass the CFA with flying colors during SLS!

Read about the CFA here:
