AIMsters

BruceLTalbot,Well, ok then. I'm glad I joined this forum to get this information! I guess I will be staying in New London( thats where my hotel is) but hanging out in Mystic! LOL Except for the parents day on Friday! I will get to see USCGA for the first time!!!!! rangermom

Downtown is not a war zone by any means, I have walked around the little shops and ice cream stores and bars/cafes on Bank St without problems, no uneasy feelings of being unsafe at all. Some streets have a lot of foot traffic, others have a lot of vacant boarded up storefronts.

If you want to check out the waterfront near the ferry terminal, do so without reservation.

There are some high crime areas of New London but just like any other city, you are pretty safe walking anywhere during the day.

I have seen 4/cs walking down Williams Street to the pizza place all the time, as well as seeing them walking down Bayonet St toward Chilis (no so much anymore now that Chilis burned down) or even walking farther toward downtown. Bike riding is very popular, many cadets keep a bike at the academy and ride them all over New London to the trails and to the parks.

Read The Day for a few weeks and pay attention to the crime reports, and after a while you'll see which areas seem to have a recurring crime problem.

Luigi59, Wow! I do want to check out the waterfront by the ferry terminal. You are a wealth of information. I feel like I have some " insider" tips now:) Thanks for the link to 'The day'. I will pay close attention to it. We are pretty easy going people and It will not take much to keep us happy while we visit there. A little food and a new area to explore! My son leaves in 6 days........ Oh the nerves ( mine not his)lol. rangermom

rangermom,

Your AIMSTER will have a blast...while not always fun, that week proved to my son that CGA was where he wanted to be. He also went to USNA Summer Seminar, and enjoyed AIM so much more! Just be prepared to not hear alot from your AIMSTER while they're there...but that only gets you ready for Swab Summer!!!

Thanks for the words of wisdom, fairwinds!!!! My son was just teasing me the other day about that very thing" not hearing from him". I will get through it. LOL Congratulation's to your son!!! You must be so proud......

Please don't let New London scare you  Luigi is correct, like any city their are bad areas that you want to avoid.
On the other hand, there are some great restaurants and cute shops near the train station. In fact, a major renovation right outside the train station was just completed in the late Spring. You'll find some great breakfast, lunch and dinner spots all around New London.

That's great news,USNA1982BGO!!!! I'm really looking forward to going. I will keep the train station in mind while visiting. I'm sure my young AIMSTER will make all of this worth while. I just love the tips on this forum from ALL of you!!!!!! rangermom

Do you think they could be talked into keeping him for another week?

Options

The only options are 1 week and/or four years!

Just got a very short phone call from the airport. He said he passed the physical test with a 245 out of 300 and made a 98 on the final indoc test. He said the week was much more difficult than Westpoint. No comparison beween the two.

Your son's stats are exactly what mine's were when he went to AIM last year, and I have heard from many sources that the CGA summer program, as well as Swab Summer, is much more difficult than the other academies.

We dropped DS off for AIM Session 3 this afternoon. He was psyched and ready to go. The AAP that greeted us at the front gate asked him if he had on his running shoes and if he could run in the clothes he was wearing. I'm already looking forward to the car ride home on Saturday to hear all the stories. Our New England tour begins tomorrow. OBTW, we are at the Hilton Garden Inn (nice) and trying Springhill Suites at the end of the week. Thanks to all for the hotel tips.

AIM 2nd week experience

My son went to 2nd week of AIM curious about CGA. He came back incredibly enthused, with CGA as his first college choice! His company mates (Golf) who had attended other academy summer weeks said AIM was more challenging than the other programs. He enjoyed the leadership challenges and insights (Myers-Briggs), and getting a sense of commitment to something bigger than himself. He knows about sacrifice from challenging sports, but this is in a new context. We're looking forward to the application challenges!!

Good morning! Our daughter returned from Session 2 and, like most I think, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Does anyone have a decent selection of pictures from Session 2?? Thanks

Luigi,

Thanks! Some interesting pictures and the company shots are great. Thanks again
