I contracted today, and swore in and will be going into my MSIII year next year.

I was wondering, now that I am contracted with ROTC, will I be allowed to go to Airborne or Air Assault school? I am not a SMP cadet, just a contracted cadet.

It's possible, it all depends on how may slots your school gets for each and whether there is time to fit the school into the summer that will now include LDAC.

Talk to your Cadre, let them know your desire to attend a school, there are sometimes slots available over the winter break. There are also a few slots to schools that will come up during the school year. My son went to Winter Mountain Warfare School in Feb. he had to miss 2 weeks of school to attend, he worked with his professors to make it happen and had some catch up to do when he returned but all worked out fine, it will depend on how supportive your professors are.

The key is to continue to do well, be towards the top of your class and you'll have more opportunities, and let the cadre know that you are eager to go to a school.

My school gets 2 Airborne, 2 Air Assault slots a year, given out to the highest pters in the battalion. I would have to discuss with my professors, I would like to go during the summer but I don't think that is going to happen anymore.

Just as Jcleppe said, it is possible depending on slots available, just be aware your main priority MSIII summer is LDAC. Airborne/Air Assault priority goes to MSII's (usually).

You can still go to airborne as an MSIII. A friend of mine is going after LDAC, but most III's will do CTLT, not ABN/AASLT.

As others have said your prime time to go will be the summer after MSII year (MSIIs are priority). Just because you have 2 slots now means nothing, it changes every year and I am pretty sure the slots will be reduced in the coming years for cadets. You will need to be in the top of the OML because MSIII year is mainly LDAC and CTLT (still good training).

I don't see you receiving ABN but hell who knows just keep talking to the SMI about getting you in the system for schools.

Something to consider, if you get seriously injured in AB, AA etc., it could be bad for your scholarship and career...and you can do them later when you are 'In'.

The other opportunities; language, cultural, study/service abroad are only available as a cadet. I know a young MSII cadet who is spending his summer training in Kazakhstan, (fully funded) a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Really good advice. Keep in mind if you dont get selected while your in school there are opportunites for Airborne and/or other schools after you commission.
