Hi. I'm a high school sophmore focused on earning an appointment at USCGA. Wanted to see if I was qualified; here's what I've been doing:

    Tennis, Varsity Sport
    Marching Band: Field Captain
    Peer Mediation
Hospice Volunteer: Over 150 certified hours
    Music Honor Society
New Jersey Region III Band (highly selective, by audition only)
Summer busboy (20 hours a week)
(Natl Honor Society prob junior year)

    3.8 Un-weighted GPA, 4.5 weighted, top 9% ranked abt. 30/434
SATs not taken yet, but studying to earn about 650/650!!

And would playing a brass instrument(Drum and Bugle, etc.) and playing a sport increase my chances of appointment?

    Thanks for your feedback

    Qualified

I would most certainly apply. And they are looking at the total person, not just the sum of a lot of activities. So playing an instrument and sports will all be taken into account, but its not something I would do just to get admitted.

Keep doing, and excelling at whatever you choose to do. And think about what and how activities show you to be an intelligent, motivated student who has leadership potential.

I'd try to do a sport that is more physically rigorous than Tennis in the Fall or Winter. Not just for your applications sake but to help prepare you physically. Try cross country or wrestling.

No offense but my wife was a tennis player and in GREAT shape! Tennis players run and have great upper and lower body strength :thumb:
IMHO, do any physical activity that you enjoy and will keep you in top condition. Our incoming Swab is currently doing daily core workouts that she calls, "Pilates on steroids" :shake: and running just enough to keep herself on track but so as not to risk injury.
