Anyone familiar with the following Army ROTC programs- Syracuse, UOregon, Penn State, VT, and Lehigh?

I’m still in high school but I visited Penn State’s ROTC unit for an entire day. I followed a student around going to lab, PT, classes, and even got to meet all his friends. the Army ROTC program is very out going and friendly. Everyone always has a smile on their face and loves to talk to perspective students. I would highly recommend the program. I applied on my ROTC application and p ike’s Penn State, so that is when I am going in the fall

DS and I visited VT as part of his college tour in 2018. Unlike the others you listed, VT is an SMC (one of 6) and runs a full Corp of Cadets program.

There you will eat, drink, and sleep ROTC. It would be a far different experience than Penn State, Syracuse, or any of the others. Texas A&M or Norwich would be the closest comparison (they both have a mixture of civilian and CoC students)

They have recently built new dorms for the Corp and they are very nice. DS was accepted there and the campus is beautiful, but he decided to go elsewhere.

Hey there, I'm a Junior AROTC Cadet in the VT Corps. If your interested, PM me or let me know here. I'm not shy publicly letting you know what VT is all about.

A little about me; I did not start in AROTC. I went through NROTC thinking that it was something but it turned out not to be what I thought. I honestly stumbled into AROTC when I overheard my friends talking about the cool training they get to go on, so I thought to apply and if I didn't get it, I would enlist. To my surprise, I got it without putting much thought into it, then I chose it, went to Basic Camp, and gained more leadership knowledge than I ever did than 2 years in NROTC.

Any questions you have, let me know. I don't care if I let the public know what we do or our organization.

Granted I commissioned in 2017, what do you want to know about Penn State?

Could I pm you?

DS will start Syracuse this fall on AROTC scholarship to Syracuse and DS is on waitlist for Syracuse for the fall with AROTC scholarship? I can connect you to the Syracuse AROTC PMS.

I am already going there as well. Trying to get an ROTC group chat together beforehand- pm me your DS’ phone # or snapchat if he wants to join it

I'll DM you their snapchat. We live in Germany, so they have an international number.

I would like to highlight that any Army ROTC from any university is great. AROTC is phenomenal, especially Basic Camp if you are still unsure about Army and becoming an officer, it gives you an insight into the structure. I met plenty of students at FT Knox and my friends I made there ranges from Ohio University to Texas A&M to Universities in Hawaii. Fantastic students (Undergrad and Graduate) and I'll recommend their schools to anyone in or near their states. You honestly can't go wrong with AROTC anywhere. However, I have heard the SMCsto tend to receive more summer training slots like Airbourne, Air Assault, CDQC, Pre-Dive, etc.

Edit: Forgot to mention the students from Puerto Rico and Alaska. I met a lot of them and they were as motivated as any of us to be in the Army and serving.

Are you living in the ROTC dorm?

The ROTC LC (Learning Community) at Syracuse is a great option for MS I cadets, since they will be rooming with another cadet, and will have shared misery when they have to be up for PT at 5:30 am in the middle of January, LOL!

Housing also tends to give ROTC cadets the slightly larger corner double rooms in Lawrinson Hall, a small perk but one that is appreciated when you see the size of the dorm rooms. Lawrinson is far from being the nicest dorm on campus (that honor belongs to Ernie Davis Hall) but it is fine for the first year. Just prepare your DD/DS for a lot of stairs. Lawrinson is a high rise, 20 floors, and the elevators are painfully sloooooowwww! You can't wait around ten minutes for an elevator when you're due on the Quad for PT in five.

While this may be true, don't discount regular ROTC programs. Granted, size (and thus funding), definitely makes a difference; when I was at Penn State we sent 2 to Sapper School - both got tabbed.

Opportunities are out there; sometimes its a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

Did you have to pay the $450 housing deposit fee? Or the other deposit fee for that matter?

Yes, we had to pay the housing deposit as well as the tuition deposit. But once the tuition and housing credits are applied after the start of the semester, the student's account will show a credit.

Did you have a 4 year scholarship? I just feel there isn’t much sense to paying a deposit on the housing/tuition that you aren’t paying
