We are flying out on Friday for DS to get a little acclimated to the higher altitude. Anyone else going out early? Any folks from previous years have any advice to help students going out this week.

My biggest challenge right now is trying to convince my son what "conservative sunglasses" actually are.

Black frames, lenses that are tinted with a black color and are not extremely reflective.

I use these and have never had an issue. They're also pretty good sunglasses given the $20-$30 price range.

I am driving my DS there on Saturday (we only live about 5 hrs away). The area we live in sits on a caprock (even though it looks incredibly flat!), so we are already at an elevation, so we don't tend to feel any extreme effects by traveling to Colorado Springs. DS went to the Academy last yr for FB camp and he actually said he felt BETTER there than at home! Good luck with that, though. My understanding is that altitude sickness is awful.

I, too, am interested in any helpful hints anyone can pass along. CMSgtRetnLAXing, good luck to your DS next week, and I hope they have the time of their lives.

Rural - I'm just wondering how he will do with his run. He can crank out 5:45 to 5:55 miles in our nice hot and humid Georgia...and 6:00 miles with some of our hills. Hoping he does as well during CFA - told him to find a rabbit for pace. Picked up some "conservative" sunglasses and just need some casual shoes (all he wears are tennis shoes, boat shoes, and flip flops).

Are you attending the graduation ceremony on Thursday?

We are heading to Colorado for the June 19th Session. Would love to hear about it from you guys. My son just completed the the West Point SLE and he absolutely loved it. We are really looking forward to AFASS.

It is good that he is staying in shape, but the CFA at AFASS will not be a record/official CFA. It is considered a practice CFA to help as a training tool. FYSA.

Yes, CMSgt, I am attending on Thursday. I plan to visit friends in the Denver area for most of the week, but I'll be there Thursday. I'll let DS decide if he's ready to leave with me on Thursday night, or, if he's not ready to leave his new friends yet, I'll come back and get him the next morning.

My son has been running & doing some of the other parts of the CFA, in preparation for next week. Plus, his football team started their summer weight room workouts, yesterday, and he participated last night in a 7 on 7 football tournament in our area. Between all of that and the PT he does weekly at CAP, I'm hoping he'll be able to handle the week and the practice CFA pretty well. I'm excited to get a baseline on where he's at on the CFA, so we will know what we most need to concentrate on.

As far as the run...if your DS is doing those kinds of times in the humidity, then, other than acclimating to the altitude change, he should do quite well in CS.

Flipper, I will try to make an effort to keep you posted. Of course, by the time I get to hear all about it from DS myself, your DS will already most likely be on his way here. But I'll try to get the "scoop" and fill you in on Thursday or Friday of next week.

Padre, We were told the CFA at the Academy during Summer Seminar can count as his first official. Can I ask where you are getting your information from?

Multiple threads on this issue. The bottom-line is because of the altitude, AFA believes it would be unfair to count the Summer Seminar as an official one. Also, my DS's ALO said the same thing.

Definitely check to see what the current policy is, but when my son went to Summer Seminar the CFA taken there did not count.

If I am wrong, my DS will know since he is in Session #1 and I then will let you know, CMSgt.

Either way, your DS should still keep on training as if it will count.

That's the way we are approaching it, FWIW. Even if it doesn't officially count, DS will dive into it as though it does, because the feedback we get from that will be priceless in determining what areas he needs to strengthen.

Admissions said the altitude would be a problem for most kids and the CFA would not count. My son asked "even if I want it to?" He was told "You won't". We are from CT (New England Region).

SS Cadre here: because of the altitude and the graders (students grading each other), this CFA will not be one that can count towards the application. Instead, it is intended to give students an idea of where they need to be working and improving. Additionally, acclimating takes more time than we would like! I remember that as basics, we ran the AFT within the first week- my score was terrible and I was definitely not the last to finish. Don't be disappointed if your son/daughter struggles, because it's completely normal! It gives them an idea of what to expect if they join us in the future.

We came up with a saying for our lacrosse players this year: "snowflakes" as most parents think their little "snowflake" is one of a kind and different from the rest

My snowflake thinks he "has this" regarding .... I keep telling him just wait...can't wait for him to start running at altitude.;)

BTW - his name is Caleb...looking forward to seeing y'all on Sunday. Anyone there on Saturday and know of a good place to go in the CS area and want to meet and introduce let us know. Last time I was there was for an Air Force wide Civil Engineering tournament in 1988, so I doubt the places I knew even exist.

My "snowflake" just got back from his evening run and was whining about the starting of summer weight lifting in FB being poor timing this week...that he is sore. I told him not to whine and that if he keeps at it, the soreness will go away. He's afraid it will affect his scores. I told him to warm up & stretch well, beforehand. No excuses. ;)

My son's name is Zane. We will be there early Saturday afternoon and are staying at a hotel very near the Academy (will PM you the name). We've been to Colorado Springs more times than I can count, but I'd have to think about a good place to meet. One way or another, hope to see y'all there. (Good to see another TRUE Southerner using "y'all", BTW...LOL)

Well...I actually used it wrong - used it singularly "y'all" as it should have been plural - "all y'all" but I'll still hold on my Southern Card. My son ref'ed at a LAX tournament on Saturday this past weekend and after four games of running up and down the field he whined about his legs. So we had his strength coach work him harder. :director:

So next two days is all upper body - pull ups, push ups, swing training, and pool work. I am a little lucky in that one of his brothers plays DII lax and has to condition all summer as well so they have a little competition going. Then we have the 1-a-day study sessions getting ready for the next SAT (he took the new one in March and found it pretty easy so we are going to focus on that instead of a final ACT).

Can't wait for them to have a great time and am looking forward to the leadership aspect of the week for him.

    I'll respond to your PM.
