A year in the blue...

Can anyone with experience say if this was a good depiction?

As parents with little military background, it was very informative for us.

Is it recommended to show to an aspiring high school student?

It was a great documentary. All of the BCT portion will still be accurate. The doolie year portions will be very different from what is depicted in the documentary if the new plan is implemented as advertised for next year.

We watched it with our son after he was appointed. We learned a lot, but there is still a lot more to learn. And some things will have changed. But it is definitely good to get an idea what it’s going to be like.

What is the new plan that is advertised? How will it be different?

Doolies are not treated as harshly under the "new plan"....and apparently you can't even call the Doolies anymore.

The two things I noticed that were different from my 26er's experience was that there are no longer tents in Jacks Valley...they now have permanent structures. Cadets are no longer given running shoes for BCT 1.

The rest seemed pretty accurate.

A Year in the Blue follows the Class of 2014 through their first year at the Academy.
Obviously, there have been changes since this was filmed but it gives you a good idea of what to expect as a cadet.

Things will always change but the basics are the same. New things are introduced and old ones are left behind sometimes but always a good idea to get a glimpse into the program even if it is a little outdated especially for a non-military family.

It is one of the references I use with my students. As noted, a few things have changed, but the 'basics' are the same. Understanding the challenges of the path you have selected is an important part of the application process. Glad you found it!

What is changing with doolie year?

To quote the com. General Marks, he wants to make USAFA "a four year program and not a fourTH year program," essentially spreading out privileges that were earned / received after Recognition over the remaining three years in addition to changing some of the training aspects. Every new leader makes changes- this isn't unique to USAFA or even the other service academies, it's any institution!

Wasn’t it filmed in 2014 for the class of 2018? Weren’t they RTBs?
