Hi :) Wanted to get everyone's opinion on something. I'm a homeschooler who attends a co-op, and this coming year (Senior year) I have the option to do an AP lit course or dual enroll 2 freshmen comp classes. I'm leaning towards dual enrollment, just to show a homeschooled kid can handle a college workload, but what are y'alls thoughts? Ahhh, decisions decisions!!

When you say "dual enroll 2 freshmen (sic) comp classes" I assume the agreement is with the local community college.

Who actually teaches the course?

DS did duel-enrollment, but his Lit class was taught by an actual university professor at his high school. Sound strange, I know, but she left the University when she and her husband moved to this area, taught English 101/102 at the high school for the last 3 years and now has a job at a 4-year university 80 miles away. Ds only got a B in the class but that's because she and I had an agreement that she could hold his feet to the fire and treat him like an actual college student. After 2 years of having her, the boy can really write well now and scored very well in the language portion of both the SAT and ACT. Added bonus is the credits transferred to his chosen university now. Also, being able to express himself well in the written form most likely helped him get his appointment to USNA as well as garnered him some very nice scholarships. So yes, if it is well-taught, take the dual enrollment.

I’m also homeschooled and I’ve been wondering this hope you make it.

My opinion is you are better off taking the AP class. Dual enrollment varies widely, whereas everyone takes the same AP exam. Where my kids attend HS, the AP courses are more challenging than the DE courses.

I vote AP - I did both AP classes and dual enrollment and I can tell you that at least where I was, the dual enrollment was an absolute joke compared to AP, way easier even than just honors english at my large public school. I think it really depends on the college.

Our son attended a rural high school that partnered with the local reputable college. He took dual enrollment courses, taught by the college professors and sometimes a HS teacher with a master's in that discipline. They were all difficult, rigorous courses. AP was not an option for him. He worked hard, pulled A's in all of them. They were no joke.

He ended up with 27 credits, 6 of which he had to CLEP since the teacher did not hold a master's in that discipline. He did very well on the CLEP as well, which is indicative of a thorough knowledge of the subject matter.

He was able to validate some courses at USNA. I think it really depends on the rigor of the course and the quality of the instructor. Have you sat down with the local college academic advisor? That would be the first thing I did.

My DD did the same thing before applying to West Point. Took many of the AP courses at the local college. We checked with admissions first on this subject and they said they were equal. Now my second DD is doing the same thing since she goes to a very small college prep high school. They also partner with the local college.
