Does anyone know the process USNA has for when they review which applications? My DS application has been complete, with three nominations, since November. We aren’t expecting that he would have heard yet, just wondered if because it is complete it’s been reviewed? Is it possible that other applications complete and incomplete have been reviewed and not his? Just curious to the process for reviewing.

I understand they review on a rolling basis. Tell your DS to check the portal daily and see if there is any changes, make sure all the boxes are completed and check. Check the email inbox everyday and finally maybe send an email to his admissions counselor and ask if there’s anything else needed.

Checking daily will only exacerbate the issue, it'll drive you crazy!

Well… my DD got into the habit of checking “almost” daily. That’s how she figure out the medical was taking to long, got in touch with them and resolved an insignificant issue that was holding the whole DoDMETS process, I have other examples but that’s one of them
Also that’s how she found out about her appointment, checked status and there was her offer! No MOC call or email. Just checked her portal.

May I ask if Admission officer will review an application without nomination?
I completed everything except nomination. So, my status is showing incomplete. Just wonder how the application is reviewed with or without nomination.

How long do you consider too long for DoDMETS? I definitely haven't waited long enough yet but I would like to know how long it took for you to realize there might be a problem?

My DS was told by his admissions counselor that his application would be reviewed for direct, foundation, and NAPS, even without a Navy nom. He has an MoC nom to West Point, but not to Navy. The congressional staffer said that if he did not get in to West Point, but Navy or USAFA would offer appointment, they could shift the nomination. I am thinking this is office specific.

Had to go back in emails to give you a better time frame answer. Medical exam was first week in November, about a week and a half after DD got an email about a form that was send without signature, she resent within hours. Then portal said completed but waiting for review, “nothing needed from you right now” (pulling this out of my memory and what DD told me)
DD was patient, but Monday after thanksgiving, admissions emailed asking why the medical was taking so long (!!) it was during school hours so obviously my DD wanted to take care of it immediately and asked my dh to call the CIV number, they were extremely helpful and found out that “the provider” has sent one of the forms with a simple numeric mistake, and DoDMETS was waiting for the provider to send the correction for almost 2 weeks!! called the doctors office to inquire about it and within an hour it was received by the reviewing authority. Less than a week after that she was informed that medical paperwork was send for waiver consideration, we knew this so even before the medical she gather and took to the examination appointment all pertinent information, then they only requested prescription records after 13 birthday, that took 24 hours to get and send. My DD sent every time an email confirming that whatever she was sending was received
The week of December 20 waiver was granted, DD got offer of appointment in her portal the morning of December 24, accepted immediately.
With this I’m not hoping for your kid to be obsessing over this, but it definitely helps to be vigilant. Good luck !

My DoDMETS case has been complete since 12/23/21, which seems like a while but they shut down twice for Christmas and New Years. I've heard that DoDMERB can take a while, and I don't think I need to be worried about an error yet, but it's the only thing I have left on my portal, so I'm hoping it goes through relatively quickly.

Yes…no…kind of. USNA may review applications in the order that they come in. But that doesn’t mean USNA makes final decisions in the order that they come in. That’s because putting a class together, with so many moving parts that aren’t fully clear at the same time (e.g. noms, DODMERB) is like building a complex puzzle without knowing if all the pieces are on the table.

For example, you could be 3Q with a nom in December. But it’s possible that someone else in your district is qualified academically and physically, but is ranked higher on the nom slate and is awaiting DODMERB waiver. That candidate seems to have the edge and will get the nom if the waiver is granted, but USNA isn’t going to tell you “no” until all is clear.

Or maybe you’re 3Q with a nom in December but didn’t win the nom slate, so are moved to the national pool, which gets decided a couple months later. Or you’re 3Q with a nom, but USNA needs to figure out to what nom source it should allocate your appointment.

Just examples, and who knows if any applies to you. But it’s not a simple “first in, first out” process in which each decision is clear-cut once that individual’s pieces are all in place. Frankly, no matter how long it takes, it shouldn’t matter as long as the result isn’t a TWE.

Since USNA sends out Letters of Assurance at various times to candidates whose applications are incomplete, and the LOA usually specifies elements that must be completed, logic tells you some kind of review happens.

I think so! I submitted in mid-august, and they reviewed mine even while I was missing my counselor extracurriculars validation form. I think it depends on how late in the cycle you submit 👍

An application is reviewed independently of the nomination. However, an appointment requires a nomination. NAPS or foundation do not require nominations. The application might show incomplete since a nomination is required for an appointment. As always, if you are unsure of your submission status, you can contact your BGO or admissions to confirm.

We did ours the second week of December and just got a form Thursday that he needed to go in to have his ears looked at and the doct needed to sign off on the for,

So, records that are "complete pending review" for months may have already been reviewed? If a candidate lost their slates, when do the national pool selections begin? Who gets to compete in the national pool?

@Dadx4 - they do not do rolling admissions based on completion. So your child might have a 'complete-pending review' and with a nomination from November and it could take until March or April to hear one way or another. My oldest who is at USMA now - only found out in like late April that his Navy file ended up being closed without appointment. He was on their NWL (or whatever Navy calls it) and his admissions officer basically said he just missed the initial cut - then they were waiting to hear back from enough appointees to know that they had filled the roster for the year and could put those kids who were on the line out of their misery. As it turns out, my DS was not in misery as his first choice was USMA and he got in there in the 1st week of March. The biggest wave of appointments comes in second half of Feb usually. Second biggest wave comes in Mid to late Jan as all the top ranked Appointees from Noms are sent out (USNA does have discretion to NOT choose a Principal Nominee though as I rec entry learned). Son #2 for me already has his Appointment to West Point, but was clearly not the Principal Nominee on MOC slate to USNA so he will be in the waiting category unless pulled in with a football recruiting chip.

The National Pool is all the kids who are 3Q/with nomination source. The decisions from that pool are based on diversity aspects, academic aspects, geography aspects, etc.
