Son accepted appointment earlier this year and then he was notified of 4 year AROTC scholarship offer. Should one accept ROTC as a backup until R Day or in case he would change his mind on schools. Have until end of February to accept ROTC scholarship. Anyone else in same boat?

I did do a search on this forum and USNA forum for similar situations and read varying opinions. It seems the prudent course would be to accept ROTC and decline at last possible deadline.

Any advice or opinions from current prospectives or past cadets and their parents welcome.

I'm a 4 year AROTC scholar waiting on my USMA appointment, so I'm pretty much in the same boat as your son. In the AROTC contract, it says that your son's AROTC contract is voided if he reports in at USMA. So until he arrives at West Point, he has the AROTC scholarship as backup.

Not only is this backup a good idea if you son wants to change schools last minute, it's also good if he gets injured before CBT. If your son breaks a bone and does not heal before he arrives at USMA, he will be rejected because he will miss CBT. AROTC, on the other hand, will still be there and usually doesn't start until late August.

The only good argument I see for giving up an AROTC scholarship is "so others can have it". This is a valid argument I guess, but the Army does expect a percentage of these scholarships to not be used, especially in lieu of the academies.

Personally, I am keeping my AROTC scholarship until the day I step on the USMA campus. I don't see why your son shouldn't, either.

    Good luck!
