Appointment Statistics

SAT: 1320

I would advise getting a higher one than mine though. Do your prep work, I never got to it. (Maybe as a result of moving three different times from fall junior year to fall senior year, just maybe)

Accepted USAFA appointment a few days ago.

I got denied with a 35 on the ACT (11/12 writing). I believe I was a very strong academic candidate all around -- for example, I took 8 AP courses up till Junior year and got a 5 on all of them except one, which I got a 4 on. I even self-studied for two of those exams. On top of that, I'm taking 6 more AP courses this year. In terms of ECs, I did 2-3 varsity sports depending on the year, including Captain for the swim team, which I joined early in 7th grade. I am president of several clubs as well.

However, I should note that I am not the top of my class grades-wise, because I was very apathetic about school freshman and sophomore year. My numerical GPA for those two years were around a 92; compared to Junior year, which was over a 100 (my school doesn't publish unweighted GPA), it was clear that I didn't put all the effort in that I should've. My interview may have been lacking as well -- unlike the one I had for West Point (it was in-person during SLE), I didn't feel like I made a super strong connection with my ALO.

Still, I had 2 nominations (Senator, Congressperson), and before that I received a Letter of Assurance from West Point. I passed DoDMERB and the CFA so I thought I was pretty much a shoe-in.

TL;DR
Just goes to show how poor of an indicator statistics can be. Don't get bogged down by numbers, and don't develop hubris because of them. Many people got into USAFA with "worse" stats than me -- partially, I think, because of how competitive my district is, but also because they likely had better essays/interviews than me.

Good luck!!

Are you reapplying?

DS got TD with 1400 SAT (760 Math). He will retake SAT this coming June to hopefully improve the English component and shoot for perfect Math. I know SAT is not the only component. But, i’m sure the SAs will give it a good 👍 for retaking SAT besides improving on ECAs, leadership and CFA score.

The SAs use the whole person concept (Athletics, Academics, and Leadership) AND they build a class from applicants across the country. They don't just pick the top 1200 candidates. Obviously do your best in everything but it is more than a test score.

Math part is always easy. DS first SAT English was only 690 (summer of 2022). He prepared himself for the test with the strategy "read the problems first and then to find the answer in the article" After he took English AP Language and Composition, he took his 2nd SAT in March 2023, his English was much better -- 790. He decided to read the article first thoroughly then to read questions and give the choice.

I wouldn't quite say the math part is 'always easy'. I got a 760 on my first try at English, and a 620 for Math. I got a 1440 my second try and was lucky enough to receive an appointment. That being said, a high SAT doesn't really mean anything for admisson, they are looking for so much more than just a test score. All you can do is your best, and hope that's enough.

35 ACT with a 36 on reading and 35 on everything else. I also had a 1540 SAT that I didn’t submit to USAFA. I took BC Calculus sophomore year but received a C in the class. I was homeschooled and attended an online school also, my GPA was about 3.8 with a 4.1 weighted. I had good ECs, I was a special olympics swimming coach, 2nd in state for a texas advanced math competition, leader of the year award at my top-5 Crew Team, Varsity crew for 3 years, and a few other things. My gpa was probably the worst facet of my application, with that C and all.

For some of the people that got appointed this year to USAFA what was your ACT/SAT?
33 ACT and 1530 SAT got me into USMA and USAFA in a competitive district. I originally got a 28 and 1320 but studied like crazy to improve which maybe they liked. Anything above 30 or 1400 proves you are academically qualified—in my opinion.
