I went to the Amish Market in Annapolis this morning and picked up some excellent fat pills, still warm. The place was booming. The line for the pretzel logs snaked around the store.

I have a well-trimmed boneless 7.75# pork shoulder braising in the fleet-size slow cooker with a cup of fresh orange juice, black pepper, garlic, cumin, some other herbs. Got up early to let that go for 8 hours. Will pull it, mix in some house-made bbq sauce, pile it high on crusty ciabatta rolls. All kinds of fun pickled things from the Amish Market. And a salted caramel pecan apple pie.

I have already announced it’s YOYO (you’re on your own) for dinner and Sunday meals, as we have good leftovers from last night and 3 2/c sponsor mids here for dinner.

Did you get new plebes this year? Do plebes have any liberty this weekend?

Going to try that pork. Ive got a big family weekend coming up to surprise DH for his birthday. He is hard to surprise, so I’m SO excited about that. Everyone will be there!! That pork looks like something I could do ahead, and freeze?

What is an Amish Market fat pill?

We occasionally skip a year with new plebes - DH has “been in the shop” with some surgeries and medical procedures, has another one coming up in October.


“Fat Pill” - generic military term for any essentially nutrition-free but yummy donut, pastry, sticky bun, cinnamon roll, etc., where the predominant ingredients are sugar, carbs, fat.

Oh yes - I did make up some bacon mac.

An unusual choice for the bbq pork sandwich topping rather than Q sauce - P.F. Chang’s Dynamite Ranch. Saw it in the Commissary, though it might be fun for raw veg dip. Definitely zing from sriacha and other hot elements, cooling ranch base, work well with the pork.

Watching game now. I always like to add up the weights of ND team vs Navy. They always outweigh Navy in gross tonnage. Wears out the defense.

Recognizing mac and cheese is one of those dishes with much regional variation and preference (sour cream yes/no, crumb topping yes/no, etc.), I’ve settled on this one as a reliable crowd pleaser.

My edits:
Cavatappi pasta, under cooked as the recipe recommends
Half extra sharp cheddar, half Fontina
1/2 lb to 1 lb cooked bacon, folded in before cooking.

The husband of DS’s sponsor family retired from the Navy in May. He was a USNA Grad. He and his sweet family moved to another state 😢
DS said he was going to pay a visit to the sponsor family office to inquire about getting another family. DS truly enjoyed their friendship, guidance, and welcoming of him with open arms. I am so thankful for all of you that Sponsor our babies 🙏🏻❤️🤗

I usually leave that out too. That’s their classic recipe. I usually make any recipe first exactly as written. Then I mess with it.

Note the balance of just 6 ozs pasta to the cheese amount.

Just ouch.

I’m disappointed there hasn’t been any mention of Navy’s service commitment, or the games roots. No clips of March on. There is a lot to showcase for halftime, and nothing Navy.

Looking forward to conference play 💯

I did notice that without paying attention to the amount of cheese. Seems less pasta than I normally make with mac and cheese.

But I am looking for the best Mac and cheese recipe. My sisters have a good one.

I agree. Come on they should do better.
 
NBC could have done a lot better with USNA packets for this game. The announcers have made a few halfhearted comments but stumbled through them. Perhaps they will fill in the 4th quarter with some color.
Note: I am a ND grad but call it as I see it.
