Army ROTC offers

...is there a downside to choosing the 3-yr AD. I realize that tuition the first year is on me (but with his merit scholarship it's basically a wash). Let's assume that he'll have no trouble with the APFT .

1. If your son accepts the 4-year scholarship all he has to do is pass the APFT to activate the scholarship.

2. If your son accepts the 3-year AD he also needs the support of the PMS and needs to pass the APFT.

Two things to consider. In my DD's case the PMS she knew well was transferred to another assignment before she ever got to campus. Things have worked out fine but the new PMS had nothing vested in my DD. That's not a big deal since she was 4-year, but a change in PMS is a bigger risk for a freshman on a 3-year AD because a cadet needs his approval to activate the scholarship at the start of sophmore year.

In addition, right before heading to school my DD injured her leg and was unable to run for several months. She was down to just a couple of weeks to go before losing her scholarship when she was able to pass the APFT. A 3-year AD simply has more time for some type of injury to be an issue.

My overall point is that the 3-year AD introduces greater risks of getting a scholarship than the 4-year. This difference in risk level is important to consider, along with the financial differences.

DD also received her letter yesterday. Even though the website showed Emory, the letter had 4 year at the instate university and 3 year AD at her #1 choice private school along with the 3 year at Emory.

We are still confused how Emory made it on her list since it wasn't a choice she listed. DD did have nursing major. Maybe that had something to do with it?

The deadline is 2/29. DD is going on an overnight visit to the Coast Guard Academy in March. Even though she already accepted the appointment, I think that I may counsel her into accepting the AROTC scholarship too. What if after the overnight, she discovers it isn't for her? I just hate closing the AROTC door before she has all the information. However, morally, it just seems wrong to accept both the appointment and ROTC scholarship. UGH! I just wish the deadline was 3/31 instead.

For every applicant who feels like it's wrong to accept two offers while they make a decision there at three or four who feel fine sitting on a bunch of offers and holding on to them until the end, or not telling anyone when they finally make up their mind. In my opinion being up front with the school and honest with all stake holders is the best policy. There is nothing wrong with carefully deciding which path is right. Just make sure once the decision is made you let everyone know.

As far as the risk of a 3 AD vs 4...the PMS is most likely going to validate the 3AD unless the cadet isn't meeting the standards. Remember that every year the cadet has to meet APFT, GPA, and medical standards. If the cadet isn't meeting those standards the PMS can take the scholarship away regardless of whether it's a 3 or 4 or 2 year scholarship.

Still waiting and hoping for my daughter's letter to come in Mondays mail. For those that received a letter, did your online status change first? Seeing that some received the letter yesterday makes us feel that maybe just maybe I can post some good news on Monday.

Absolutely accept the scholarship. She would not be the first to hang on to both an appointment and a scholarship. Good luck to your DD.

I agree with kinnem, this is a very common practice. The biggest reason why is G forbid they injure their body very late in the spring/early summer and cannot report on time for medical purposes. This allows them to put in place the scholarship. Many parents will pay for the college deposit to hold that spot, some colleges will refund the money if you withdraw by a certain date. You can also call the admin of the college and discuss this with them, some will even waive it because they understand the system.

Over the course of my yrs here I don't think there has been 1 yr that passed without someone planning on attending an SA and than come July/August they are going to plan B college. It is a rarity, but it does occur. Those that were prepared for the what if managed to transition easier than those now scrambling to enroll in any college they can get into on a late date.

The saddest one had to be about 4 yrs ago, as they were getting off the bus on I-Day they tripped and broke their leg. They were on a plane back home the next day. Luckily, their parents had informed the college months earlier and he was able to slide right in with other incoming freshman, he did his freshman yr and went to the SA the following summer.

The online status will change first, then the letter is sent. The online status will only show the school or school's that the scholarship was awarded, it will not show what type. The letter is the only official notification, it will sometimes show schools not listed on the status page or a completely different school, the letter will also tell which scholarship was offered, 3yr or 4yr.

If your status has not changed you will not receive a letter and will be rolled ovr to the next board.

If you're saying that anyone whose online status has not changed yet will not receive a scholarship offer at this board, then I believe you are mistaken. I could be misunderstanding you but I just wanted to point that out in case anyone was freaking out about not getting an online status change yet. There is still time before everyone hears results from this board. My online status has not changed but I was just informed by the PMS at my top school that I was unofficially awarded a scholarship.

Congratulations! I guess it is fair to say that all OFFICIAL scholarship offers out of the 2nd Board are now published. I'm not sure what "unofficial" means, other than perhaps a decision made between Boards, or something else? Anyway, I hope you get the letter from Cadet Command confirming this. Until then, nothing officially exists, since, as far as I know, PMSs do not have the authority to bind U.S. Army Cadet Command to a scholarship offer... I believe that requires the signature of a General Officer (O7 and above), which is two ranks above almost all PMSs (there are a couple of O6 = COL PMSs, but most are 05 = LTC). Anyway, sounds like you have a great PMS who likes you and is doing whatever he can to take care of getting you that official offer. I'm going to guess that you got into a school that is a high priority to Cadet Command, and if so, congratulations.

I hope this turns out to be true for you.

You weren't mistaken with what I said. CC sent out the Official Scholarship Award Letters over a week ago. Not quite sure what an "Unofficial Award" Is. Unless a person lives overseas they should have received the letter by now. If the status page has not changed to read the you have been awarded a scholarship then it is a 99.99% chance you have been rolled over to the next board.

There is a reason PMS's and ROO's are specifically told not to contact applicants before the letters are sent, Clarkson has mentioned this several times. The reason is that while an initial offer may be indicated by either the status page or preliminary notification to battalions, nothing is official until the letter arrives.

I think the last of the scholarship awardees that saw their status changed have posted they have received their letters. The deadline for acceptence has already been set.

I don't think anyone needs to "freak out" just yet, there is another board in March.

True! This Board is full of posters (parents/cadets) who were awarded their scholarship out of the 3rd Board last year.

It would be great if you could post when you receive the "Official" letter from Cadet Command confirming your Scholarship Award. I'm sure there are other applicants whose status have not changed that would get a lot of encouragement knowing that awards are still being offered after the official award letters have already been sent.

Keep us posted.

In response to those who were helping me out with my Duke ED situation,

I contacted the woman in charge of scholarships at Duke as well as the "train2lead@usacc.army.mil" email address that I found on my scholarship letter 4 days ago, but have yet to receive a reply. Is this the correct email to contact Cadet Command? It is the only email address of any kind that I could find on my award letter and the "Contact Us" link on my AROTC scholarship portal doesn't work. Consequently, I'm a little bit confused as to who I should contact

You got an official Award letter? 4 days ago? when was it dated?

From his previous posts it looks like he received his letter a week ago around the same time everyone else was receiving theirs. Maybe he just found the email address 4 days ago. I haven't read of anyone receiving their letters that late, but of course this board is just a small sample of the applicants.

I'm still a little curious about zl677 and his "Unofficial Scholarship". No word on that front yet.

Still waiting!

Does anyone know when is the next AROTC board meets? It's mid February and haven't got any reply. I keeping check the Scholarship status website but no change. Do they meet every month? Thank you.

The 3rd and final board meets in March(unsure of exact date)the results will post late March, early April. Hope you have multiple plans for college in place to help out in case the AROTC scholarship doesn't come through for you. It has been very competitive this year and no one knows for sure what to expect.

Keep the faith, but have a back up plan:thumb:
