I'm so new at this. We flew from Dallas this past weekend so our junior son could do his overnight at VMI. It was a go! He was impressed. He will be looking to apply for an Army ROTC Scholarship for VMI. I'm doing my research and trying to get information as we move forward.

Anyone on this forum have a son who received an Army ROTC Scholarship to VMI recently? It seems the word competitive is used often, but the Scholarship information does not show anything too difficult to obtain. He more than exceeds what I see on their site and looks to have what it takes to receive admission to VMI.

Any information you can provide about your experience is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

PM Strength and Honor -- he is there now on an AROTC scholarship. He would be a wealth of info.

Jarhead1775 is another current Rat you could PM. I don't remember if he received a scholarship.

My DS received a 4-yr AROTC scholarship after the 2nd board last year to his top 3 schools, VMI being one. He ultimately declined to attend WP, but he had not interviewed or visited VMI at the time of the award.

The stats they show as requirements for the AROTC Scholarship are the minimums. Exceeding those minimums will be needed to be competitive for the scholarship. You can search through some of the recent threads for applicants that have received scholarships so far this year to get a better idea of what is needed to be competitive. Just remember the selection boards look at the Whole Person Score, Academics/Leadership/Athletics. A well balanced application is what your son will want to work towards.

Your DS needs to hustle. The AROTC application deadline for the next board is Dec. 24. His application needs to be complete by then, including recommendations, etc.

DS is 4-year NROTC at VMI, may be some similarities to the process.

All Scholarships are competitive. The 4 year ones are Nationally competitive and the 3 and 2 Year are competitive at the school level. If I remember correctly the Navy gave out about 1,200 4-year National Scholarships in 2014. I think that included the Marine and Navy Nurse Options as well.

Applying for the Naval Academy seemed to make a slight difference, because they requested that information in the 4-year application. Navy also gives out Scholarships on a tier basis; 80% go to Tiers 1 and 2. T1 is Engineering, T2 is more to maths and sciences, and T3 is languages and other. It may help with the Army path.

One of the bigger differences is that the Navy tells you where to go based on your 5 schools (1 being in-state) you submit to them. Army gives you the scholarship and lets you pick the school.

Mississippi State uses this form to determine suitability: http://www.armyrotc.msstate.edu/benefits/forms/cc159-R.pdf

    Good luck!

I'm not currently on scholarship but am seeking a 3 year in campus scholarship, so PM me with any questions if your son is like me makes the mistake of only applying for a Marine scholarship and has to try to get an Army one the following year! lol
