ARMY ROTC Third Board Winners

DS received his paperwork. Needs to turn in by May 10. Question, his paperwork states that he is not yet medically qualified, but he has taken DoDMERB for WP and his status is qualified. Do we need to send a copy of that paperwork back with what CC sent so they are aware? Or will they check with DoDMERB at some point?

tutlerunner, no need to send in any DoDMERB paper work to CC. They will pull the information/medical exam results from DoDMERB. Just be sure to send in the scholarship acceptance on time.

It looks like a two year community college with a military focus.

That's what I'm wondering - what her PFT scores are? I don't know - how do I find out? Her high school PE teacher conducted the test and submitted the forms.

That's weird, I submitted my own. It was just a sheet of paper I scanned.

The same thing is happening to our daughter...no scholarship offered through cadet command but emails coming in from schools she applied to as well as schools those we've never heard of (community military schools) She had applied to all large universities because she (currently trilingual) wants to learn more critical languages then work as a language specialist. We were a bit surprised that a black female with a 4.4 GPA, multiple AP's/dual enrollment, top 10 in a class of over 300 did not get an offer! There must be a lot of weight placed on the PFT because although she is fast (Ethiopian), she is not strong. Does anyone know how we can find out her PFT score? Is it possible, if we get her a trainer and help her improve the PFT score, that she could get a campus based scholarship at one of the schools currently emailing? Thanks everyone.

Kitty, good for her! with those stats she should have no problem getting offered a campus based scholarship. If you/she feels she is weak in the PFT she can easily raise her fitness level over the summer to be able to get a qualifying score on the APFT. Tell her to get going and show up on the first day ready to nail the APFT as that will be the first impression the cadre gets of her. Good luck

Thank you, turtlerunner, for giving the date. Hopefully, we will get our paperwork soon.

As far as the medical exams, do those have to be done by then or before school starts? DD was awarded a 3year, so does she actually have another year to complete the medical and fitness testing?

Honestly, I have no clue. I'm sure the exam doesn't have to be done by 5/10 just states the scholarship is conditional on being medically qualified.

We actually got the DoDMEB letter already, but as of yesterday not the scholarship packet yet.
I think it says (don't have it with me) schedule your appointments (eye dr first, then medical) within 5-weeks of the date of this letter.

I wanted to make a thread where we could have a discussion about what to do next.

So here, add your name to the list.

you have to be medically qualified by the end of the first school quarter that the scholarship begins

You might want to confirm the first quarter information. Understanding is that until found medically qualified you have not met full scholarship criteria. Which means military will not be paying your semester tuiton, or stipend.

Yes and No.

If a cadet is still going through the medical process when school starts they can't contract until they are qualified. During that time they will not get their Stipend, Book Money, or Scholarship Tuition.

If a cadet gets qualified during the first semester/quarter the tuition will be paid and they will get their book money. The stipend will start from the date they contract, they are not paid the stipend retroactive.

If the cadet is not medically qualified during their first semester/quarter, then the tuition is not paid for that period, they will then have the next semester/quarter to get qualified.

Need feedback/insight as this is my first "go around" with a DS who applied for the AROTC scholarship but did not receive an award. Late today he received emails/calls from two ROO's from schools he did not list nor apply to. They seemed to be aware of his status and expressed what appeared to be genuine interest in my DS. They also made it clear that they may have school-based scholarships for him if he'd like to pursue. I have to say...it's April 20 and boy are we cutting it close and I could sure use some advice from anyone with prior experience. Are others receiving these inquiries, are they "par for the course" after the three boards have concluded and more so the result of a general recruiting outreach, or is it possible that these might be more targeted and they could have slots available for potential school-based ROTC scholarships? I guess what I am asking in plain English is..are these more real or an un-targeted contact effort of those who did not secure a national scholarship. Thanks in advance and now my DS's head is spinning once again :). My DS plans to return their calls tomorrow but better to know what we're walking into. Thanks!

SGTLee, the same thing is happening to my DS - he got three emails yesterday. Must be part of their recruiting efforts. Unless one of the schools makes a "concrete" scholarship offer, I guess he will be sticking with his first choice school.

I think there may be more of this happening now.

Back when my younger son applied in the Fall of 2010, he received an email from a school not on his list prior to the first board, he actually added that school to his list and was awarded a scholarship there, he ended up not going there. That was the only email he received and he didn't get any after he was awarded the scholarship.

From what I've read over the past couple years Cadet Command has been shifting to having more available to Battalions/Brigades for scholarships and giving fewer National scholarships, trying to cut down on the attrition within the scholarship winners.

If that's the case then it seems logical that there would be more contact made by more battalions to applicants that did not receive a scholarship but had a strong application. These battalions are probably looking to fill some slots now and maybe save some slots for later after they have a chance to evaluate their new cadets.

Seems like there could be some good opportunities out there if someone is flexible in where they attend school.

Good luck to all of you.

Sgt LEE....not sure if this helps. While still in the ROTC process in 2010, my daughter received phone calls from the ROO's of schools on her list (Michigan, Ohio State and Montana State) and a letter in the "regular" mail from the University of Portland. We had never heard of the school so it obviously wasn't on her list. We researched the school, added it to her list and later changed it to #1 on her list after a visit and that is where she went (over Michigan). My son on the other hand didn't get a national scholarship in 2012 but had visited Boise State and Gonzaga which were #1 & 2 on his list. It was about a month later that Boise State called him directly and offered him a 4 year scholarship so that answer to your question is.....YES, they are real as schools have their own money set aside to offer these scholarships. Obviously, the paperwork will stipulate the scholarship is good for that school only and can't be transferred. My son's paperwork even said he can't change majors without permission from the cadre.

There are chances for supplemental scholarships once the boards are complete. These are offers the battalion can offer with national scholarship money. How many is decided by the money left and where is decided by the brigade/battalion in "need"

A non STEM/NURSE scholarship student can change their major one time with PMS authorization. Nurse/STEM require a Cadet command approval.

Great intel K2Rider. I've encouraged my DS to explore these and let him know. Fascinating turn of events for your DS and thank you for the feedback.

On the 4 year winner it just says "Full Tuition." Do the individual Universities and Colleges have specific room and board forms that are completed once my DS arrives on campus?

AROTC scholarship and room and board for the college is not connected. Once you commit to the college they will send you info on dorms/housing and meal plans. Be sure to check with the admission office as some colleges will provide R/B for ROTC cadets.

The AROTC Scholarship will cover either Tuition or Room and Board. Some schools may offer R&B but as Sheriff said, the two are not connected and the scholarship does not cover both.
