My DS was awarded a 3yr AD AROTC scholarship on the second board. His ROO has discussed with him the possibility of upgrading to a 3.5 or 4 yr. once he has been on campus a bit. The ROO instructed DS to bring workout clothes with him when we come to the school for orientation in June so that he can administer the APFT to him. He said it will play a strong part in determining if DS gets the scholarship upgrade. DS is not going to have any problem maxing out the sit-ups and push-ups. However, he is currently at least 30 seconds off from maxing the run time. That seems like a lot of time to make up between now and the middle of June. DH is working with DS on his running, but some of his problem seems to be with his form (an issue with "duck feet", which doesn't seem real easy to correct). I know that ideally DS should be able to max out the APFT in order to get the upgrade, and he's hoping to get the run time down by then. But, is it a "non-starter" if he can't?

If your son does the max number of SU and PU's and runs a 13:30 2 mile he would score a 293, that would be a great score for someone that has yet to start the program. Your son will be surprised by just how many new cadets fail their first APFT, even those on scholarship. As long as he has his form down tight for the SU and PU's and can do the max when tested a run time of 13:30 shouldn't hurt him, just keep training, he might want to talk with the Track Coaches at his school for some tips if he isn't already on the Track Team, they can give him some great tips to reduce his distance run times.

Has he checked out this website: http://www.military.com/fitness-center/military-fitness/running/archive

My DS has found all of the info really helpful. Maybe it will offer some tip to overcome his issues? HTH

DS just upgraded to 3.5 year after outstanding first semester and commendable work to rank high on OML. And, yes, some cadets do not start out well, so other cadets may have a chance for upgrade. Good luck!

Just make sure he also realizes that the majority of the weight of the decision, to award an upgrade, lies in his academics. 40% of his OML goes towards his grades; so if he isn't getting those grades, than maxing the APFT wont matter. And the further down the road we go, the less money CC will most likely be appropriated. Therefore that means less money to split among each Brigades' programs - especially the smaller the program is.

I came in with a 3AD as well. Had a 3.24 CGPA for engineering (... it was a loooong first semester ...), and about 230'ish score for APFT (don't remember the exact number) and was upgraded over spring break, contracted last Monday.

So yes, it is possible for your DS to get an upgrade. But just keep in mind that he can't tunnel vision himself into the idea of solely focusing on maxing the APFT, by sacrificing his grades.

    Best of luck to him!

You'll find a letter uploaded on the AROTC scholarship application web site stating same. Nice little surprise wasn't it?

No new letter uploaded on my portal, but under the status tab it now shows a 4 year scholarship as opposes to the 3 year one I was awarded at the second board. Could this just be an error? Don't want to get too excited

ABF, another user here, found his DS was upgraded the same way. I imagine it's accurate but check with the cadre at your college or cadet command to confirm.

I was upgraded from 3 to 4 year as well! I have emailed the ROO at my school about its legitimacy.

30 seconds is not too much to shave off between now and June. A month and a half ago, I started running track to get in shape for my APFT. I've shaved off two minutes so far, and now I run a 14:12. I know the last little bit will be harder than the first, but trust me, if I can do it- anybody can.
