I'm about to join AROTC, however I was going to enlist because I want infantry. I want to know if I ADSO, will I be better off then if I didn't. I have a 290 APFT and i'm going to be a incoming freshmen. I plan to stay in the Army for a long time anyway so the 3 extra years doesn't sound bad. Should I do it? I know its early to think about but I would like to know what others think. Thanks.

The whole purpose of an ADSO is to be better off than if you didn't ADSO, so yes.

That's the thing... can anyone one tell me if they DIDN'T got thier 1st branch by ADSO?

Yes, every year people don't get their first choice branch, but it's normally due to factors in their control, i.e PT scores, GPA, etc. Infantry is popular, but not horribly difficult to get - do what you're supposed to do and you should be fine.

Lots of factors go into getting preferred branch including the needs of the Army at that time. Even though DS knew he was top 10% he didn't know he got his goal of Infantry until official branch notification because it's up to where the Army needs 2nd Lts. In addition to ADSO you can also list branch detailed to Infantry but at this point you'll have lots to focus on as
a MS 1.

Ok... can you explain branch details? I'm confused.

Certain branches (I.e Signal, MI, Finance, etc) need a lot of Captains, but don't need a lot of LT's. Others (I.e Infantry, FA, Armor, etc) need lots of LTs, but fewer Captains and above. So the first branches will donate, or detail, these officers to the second branches while they are LT's. when the LT becomes promotable to Captain he/she will begin the process of moving back to their control branch for the career course.
