Just wondering if anyone knows the timeline for how scholarships are processed. The website says they are now taking apps for the class of 2014-2015.

My son may be retaking his SAT in June - does anyone think this might be too late to be considered for army scholarship?

begin doing the application as soon as you can.. compiling all info... My son took the ACT in October and was easily able to use those scores in his application. I think we submitted the application in Dec/Jan. I would suggest a visit to the ROTC ROO at his top choice schools. These folks can give you great guidance and give him an idea of the commitment... plus, they will be the ones conducting your interview. It helps if you are comfortable with the interviewer... good luck

    application

    Army ROTC?

If your son graduates in 2014,which if i remember is what you had in another post, the first board will meet in October of 2013. As long as you have your package complete and submitted by the deadline, usually around Oct. 1, then you will be fine. You could wait until school started next year so you know what activities and possible club officer positions he will be holding.

Once you submit your application I think the only thing you can update are your ACT or sat test scores. Take all summer and get in shape so your physical fitness scores are good.

Besides, if you start the online application and don't get all the way thru you will get automatic letters from cadet command saying your application is incomplete and to call them and so on. They don't mean anything, they are just trying to make sure you remember there is more to fill out,

It's a good idea to start the application now. Unless something has changed you can save it and resume. Starting now makes it much easier to complete by the end of September, start of October which is a good time frame to shoot for. I would take the SAT/ACT this spring and again in the early fall. It should always be taken at least twice and perhaps more. Some students do better on ACT over SAT and vice-versa so try both.

I concur on visiting the schools and cadres. This spring i the best time to make those visits.

wonderful! thank you for info...I was concerned we did it too soon. He has tested SAT once and will test ACT & retest SAT in June then.

We have touched base & visited 1st choice school as well...so we will stay in touch. PT is not a problem for him - he stays busy (powerlifting, track, crossfit...he's crazy)

Has any one experienced any technical difficulties using the online scholarship portal. When he went to check on status it gives him a error messages.

Some browsers work better on some sites than others. Google Chrome doesn't work to well with sites that have expired security certificates and others work better than it does. My best results are usually with Internet Explorer. However, if something doesn't work with one, then try another.

One word of advice when in comes to the application process & standardized testing. Please understand that after June, your son will most likely not get another chance to take any form of standardized testing (ACT/SAT), IF he is planning on making the October board. If you think about it, the next SAT date for the 2013-14 school year is on Oct 5, 2013. And say that the board meets sometime mid October. Then you factor in the couple weeks it takes to process your scores. Opps - you just missed the first board.

Same thing goes for ACT; that test is administered Oct. 27th; you just missed the first board for that as well. Best chances at a 4 year scholarship will be by being "Board 1" ready. That means that if you have to take the ACT/SATs again, do it by the end of this school year.

    Remaining dates for SAT:
    May 4/June 1
    ACT:
    April 13/June 8

In regards to your technical difficulty problem - the AROTC portal is not compatible with all browsers. When I did my application, I did so using Internet Explorer (the one and only time I use that dreaded thing they call a browser ...)

    Best wishes!

    AROTC application

The previous posts are excellent advice. However, we were able to update the information as often as we wanted. We were told by CC that the paperwork that is brought before the board is not printed until the document deadline has past.

ex. The Oct board was around the 12th. However all info/documents/updates had to be completed and received by say the 5th in order to go before the board. The Jan. board was the 7th, so all documents/updates had to be received by Dec 15th. (dates approx.)

So the info that is presented before the board is the info that is posted on the document deadline. You must get everything updated before that date. Hope I didn't confuse you.

Keep everything as accurate as possible and on time. That saves anxiety about making sure you have everything documented. My son tweaked his essays more times than I can count. He wrote his and then someone gave him the book "How to win an ROTC scholarship" by C.W. Brewer. It gives great examples of how to compose your essays, what the board is looking for, with lots of other suggestions. He really benefited from this reading this. Give it a try.

    Best of luck....
