AROTC scholarship award

At many state-supported schools, room and board can equal or exceed tuition, particularly for in-state students, so it may make more sense to utilize the scholarship for R&B. However, note the following.

If the AROTC scholarship is used for tuition, it is not considered taxable income by the IRS.

If the AROTC scholarship is used instead for room and board, it probably will be considered taxable income. (verify that with your accountant - I am not offering tax advice).

If the school provides all or a portion of room and board as a supplement to the AROTC scholarship (which has been used for tuition), the R&B portion is considered taxable income.

I'm not an accountant but I can confirm it. Any scholarship money, regardless of the scholarship source, that is used for room and board is treated by the feds as taxable income. This is true for "free" room and board as well. Still, I'd rather pay a percentage of that amount of money to the feds than the whole thing to the college.

AROTC scholarship application process

My son applied for AROTC and AFROTC scholarships.
The AROTC has sent him repeated requests for information regarding his dual credit college courses.
He has sent them, has had the community college send them. Everytime he receives a letter about it (about 1x per month for the past 3 months) he calls, leaves voicemails, he emails and has his transcript sent every single time.
I am sure that this his affecting his application yet we can't get any answers as to why this keeps happening.
Any one have an experience with this??
Thank you!!

relax...that request for information will not effect whether he is boarded or not. If he receives an offer Cadet Command will just want to know that he plans to enroll in a full 4 year course of studies, and that he does not plan to use those High School college credits to graduate early. You repeatedly sending in the transcripts does nothing to answer the question they need answered.. Again, you will still be boarded if everything else is submitted. This is much like the DODMERB issue. Your letter will keep telling you you aren't medically qualified until you get an offer and get scheduled for DODMERB, but you can't get scheduled for DODMERB until you get an offer. This does not stop you from being boarded.

That person you have called and emailed and left messages for is one of 5 who are processing close to 10000 applications. I recommend you talk to an enrollment officer at one of the schools on your list, and see if they can answer your question if you aren't getting a response from Cadet Command.
