AROTC Scholarship January Boards - Post if your status has changed

Portal shows scholarship offered! Still waiting for the letter! So excited!

Not sure what you mean about "slots readily available to become Active Duty 2LT's"

SMP does not give any advantage to make Active Duty, neither does being on scholarship. Getting AD depends on the cadets position on a National OML (Order of Merit List), getting a slot at the battalion level doesn't guarantee AD. The National OML include all cadets, Scholarship, Non Scholarship, and SMP. There is no distinction between them.

There are more cadets that want AD each year then there are AD slots available, it is getting competitive.

My point: The SMP likewise is not at a disadvantage to the scholarship ROTC recipients. Reverse your point about how many ROTC scholarship recipients "wash out". If a high # fail as you assert (and I agree) then then scholarship winner who declines and goes the SMP route has a excellent chance of getting a contract his Sophomore year just about the same time the ROTC scholarship winner does?

It's a current ROTC scholarship cadet and active ARMY officer who went thru via SMP that are telling me that SMP MAY BE the better path.

I think you mentioned that the Active Officer that went through SMP did it some 26 years ago, things are a little different now.

Sounds like your mind is made up, I just hope your son does some further research into SMP, how it works in the state the school is located.

A 3yr scholarship cadet, if they pass the APFT, maintain the minimum GPA and doesn't get in any trouble is virtually guaranteed to contract at the start of their sophomore year. A SMP cadet will have to do a lot better to compete for the contracts, even if the battalion has a couple 4yr scholarship that wash out.

DS received scholarship to #1 College of William and Mary. Spoke to ROO at Cornell who has been guiding him and knows for sure he was not on their list which was #3. Waiting to see letter with details etc. Now just need to be admitted at W&M!

Congrats to all the scholarship winners. The hard part is now starting. Get in shape all, physically and mentally.

Best Wishes

Not true. Most ROTC tuition scholarships are matched by many colleges in our part of the country with room and limited board thrown in. You get an ROTC scholarship at any of the 4 on my son's list and you get room and board too.

I would not say that "Most ROTC tuition scholarships are not matched by many colleges". In fact, the list of colleges that offer room and board have dropped over the last few years.

There are schools out there who do offer this added perk and obviously your son chose 4 that did which is great.

My son's status changed...scholarship at last school alphabetically. He's very excited and we are looking forward to the details in the letter (and to also see if other schools are listed). Question--he'll have 30 days to respond. He's also an active applicant for USMA....What happens if he accepts the ROTC scholarship and then finds out he's got an appointment to West Point????

DS was offered scholarship to his first choice (Michigan State University). We are eagerly awaiting the letter to find out if there are any additional schools listed and for of course the details of the offer. His stats are:

3.7 GPA (unweighted)
28 ACT Composite
3 Varsity Sports (captain of 1)
3 school clubs (president of 2)

I do not know a lot about his choice of Michigan State but we visited the campus and it was beautiful and he loved the way that the men/women treated him during the visit.

He should accept the scholarship by the deadline. If he receives an appointment to West Point then he can decline the scholarship at that time.

ROTC scholarships are not like EA admissions. It is not binding. SA trumps ROTC scholarships.

They actually have the upper hand when you accept.

Fail DoDMERB with no waiver, scholarship is revoked.

Bust PFT and the scholarship is revoked.

Don't carry the cgpa min., the scholarship is revoked.

I am with Jcleppe, accept the scholarship, but remember plan B may become plan A very quickly.

Just checked my status!
ROTC Scholarship to #2 school!
Female
ACT: 32
GPA: 3.92

Congrats to everyone who received a scholarship!

Just checked. Received a scholarship to my 3rd choice. I'm not sure if I will accept it, as I have been really reconsidering everything. Here are my stats:

Student Government throughout high school
31 ACT
Boys State Attendee

Thanks for your and Jcleppe's response on this question. My son is also waiting to hearing from both USMA and USMMA but was thrilled to receive notice about the ROTC scholarship. Now if that letter would just arrive!!

Call from a ROO

Son got a call (during a swim meet!) yesterday from the ROO at his #1 choice school informing him that he's being offered a 4 year scholarship there! He also told him that the letter will show offers from schools #3 and #4 and #6. I find it interesting that the portal only showed school #4 (and it turns out that this will one was only a 3 yr offer and the other three were 4 yr offers).

So, any of you out there feeling disappointed, just wait until you get the letters.

Roll Tide!

Not sure what alternatives you're considering. If you're wondering if you want to attend that particular school, you're reconsidering prematurely and should wait for the letter. If you're reconsidering ROTC keep in mind that
1. It's normal I'm sure to be a little nervous and
2. You can do freshman year in ROTC and then drop without any obligation.
That being said, if your considerations are deeply felt then perhaps you shouldn't accept, making the scholarships available for the next board. I have to say I'm a little surprised after all your past posts but I'm confident you'll sort through it and come to the right decision. Good luck! :thumb:

Would you mind saying which schools they were? Just wondering if there's any validity to the alphabetical theory of which one is posted on the portal -- was your #4 school first in alpha order compared to the other three?

#1 choice is the University of Alabama. #4 was the University of Alabama at Birmingham. (often referred to as UAB or on school choice it was Univ of Al at Birmingham while the other is always University of Alabama)

Other offers were from South Alabama and North Alabama. #2 school (no offer) was Auburn. #5 was Clemson. Feeling very thankful that there was no offer there either, as merit scholarships are not stackable.

Son listed schools where he was A) already accepted and B) already had merit packages. So, we are out ZERO dollars next year. Alabama allows the merit package to be used for room & board! We feel so blessed. Now we are just praying for the future roommate....
