Ask a Fourth Class.

Wisdom teeth...

my son is still holding out hope for a regular appointment, BUT he IS having all four wisdom teeth removed next month. They are lying down so will never emerge.

Furthermore, I had mine removed about 6 weeks into freshman year of college and it was very tough. I missed class for a week AND it really scared me to have to have surgery like that away from home. I just woke up one morning and they were ZOWWWIE! Surgery next day... and then trying to recover, alone, on pain meds, with "new" friends, no parents. Yuck. Only alternative was to leave school... and go home which was 6.5 hrs. away. I surely didn't want to do that!

I wouldn't want anyone to go through what I did. The complete recovery time is long too... the bone needs time to fill in the gaps... and that can take 6 weeks. Yep, you're going on about your daily routine, but if you are excercising and knock those clots lose and get "dry socket" you'll be hurting. Get those suckers out now.

Thanks Luigi.

Will they let us know when we need to submit those x-rays?

They will send envelopes for items that need to be returned to the Academy.

Will there be any additional physicals or medical exams required prior to reporting.....other than DODMERB?

No, not unless you injure yourself or contract a serious illness.

However, you WILL need to provide an immunization record (to be returned to the academy in one of those envelopes). If you do not have all the required inoculations, you will need to get them before R-Day, of you will have one seriously sore arm.

After swab summer......will 4/c be eligible for military discounts with Amtrak.

Yes. You are active duty military from R-Day.

How close is the station to the academy?

Downtown New London, right next to the Ferry piers. Very convenient.

What is the best way to get back and forth from the Academy?

From the Amtrak station? Academy shuttle (sign up via Echo company), cab, firstie with car, sponsor family, another 4/c's parent, etc.

You can also fly out of Providence or Hartford (most prefer PVD) and arrange ground transportation via any of the modes listed above.

If the choice is to have them done at home, recovering in your own bed, with the love and care from Mom to nurse you back to health, or the Groton/New London Hospital, I would choose the former. However, I do recall that there was one or two who had it done during Swab Summer and were able to complete it with no issues.

(I believe only the USMMA requires their removal regardless of their current state. Which is understandable, given the "sea year" requirement of Kings Point and the unavailability of dental care in some of the foreign ports they will be visiting.)

You don't need your widsom teeth out till senior year, but you can get them out sooner. If you get them out here, unless your insurance pays for them as well at home, they are free. This is no real medical adivce from the academy, just my knowledge(disclaimer)
but I still have my 3 in (only had 3 to start... weird) and i'm plaining on doing it in school, so when i'm on leave i can enjoy it painfree.
