Athletic Shoes Recommendation

Good afternoon everyone! The Appointee Booklet states, "Athletic style shoes are mandatory. Appointees MUST bring athletic style shoes that are serviceable, in good condition and do not have excessive ornamentation. The athletic shoe must be white, black, or grey in color. The shoe’s primary purpose must be for running (no basketball shoes, cleats, etc.). If the Appointee does not bring an approved athletic shoe, they will be required to purchase a pair upon arrival. Limited options and supply must be taken into consideration. Suggest shoes be less than a year old." With this being said, does anyone have experiences and recommendations for running athletic shoes in terms of comfort/performance/etc? Thank you!

Go to you local running store and get fitted for the proper style. They should be able to do a foot analysis. My DD wears brooks ghosts but everyone has a different opinion on what fits best for them. Also look into alternative inserts like superfeet. Well worth the extra money. They should have them at the running store too.

My daughter likes the Brooks Ghosts also. By end of basic though they were trashed and she had to get a new pair. That will be the case no matter what brand you buy.

This - a well fitted shoe/proper insoles make a HUGE difference comfort wise when you are putting in the miles. If you get a real running shoe, then they are all good - the biggest difference will be in the fit, everyone's foot is different. Brooks almost always work great for me but I know people that hate them too.

I also REALLY like Brooks. My Brooks have taken a beaten over cross country and track seasons and I've put in literally hundreds of miles in them. I highly recommend them as a running shoe. As the other people have said, go to your local running shops and get your foot measured and fitted for optimal fit and be less-injury prone.

I have the Brooks Adrenalines. Currently, they have just over 500mi on them and are ready for a replacement! Cannot second the "get fitted or go with what you know works" enough.

Agreed on getting fitted. My DD has been wearing Brook or Hokas, but when we went and and had her fitted...ended up with ASICS and she LOVES them!! They just fit better on her feet. There are just so many brands and styles & working with the fitting department really helped narrow down the choices.

Great posts! Agree shoes are so important that you want to spend the time and possibly if budget allows the best fitting shoe even if more expensive or not on sale at the moment. I personally do zappos, lowest to highest price for myself, but I took DD to the fancy shoe/outdoorsy store and she got Hokas. One other thing is to keep the box, or mark exactly what you bought the first time. DD had 2 pairs of running and boots, and after BCT asked us for both as replacements. She reserved the Nike non-waterproof boots to be mailed, and the more colorful Hokas. Hopefully 2025ers will get A-Day and PW so you can hand deliver!

I really think you should consider what @CrabbittMom said and go to a shoe store that does a foot analysis. Fleet Feet, Footworks, and Custom Footworks are all great stores that use tech to analyze your gait, where you put the most pressure, etc. These may get a bit expensive (this was actually my birthday present, as I am a runner, and was in the $100 range.) Yes, they may get trashed during BCT, but you'll know for sure the best shoe for you that you can re-purchase. It's a great investment. I used to get pains in my foot when I ran, especially when I was training for my marathon, but as soon as I went to Fleet Feet and got the right shoes, they went away. Just something to consider.

Also, while Nike is a big brand and all, don't just turn to them for running. The shoes I have now are Asics, and they work amazingly. They're super comfortable, durable, and lightweight. Saucony and Brooks are also great brands, as well.

Another name to throw out there is ON running. My DS tried a pair of these his doolie year after the ones he took were starting to be on their last leg and an upper classmen had recommended as that is what they were wearing and now these are the only running shoes he will run in at USAFA. They are a little pricey so there is that, however they have lasted longer than previous shoes/brands. I will also say no matter what you get if at all possible go to a store that will give you a true measurement and evaluate your strike pattern to show you shoes that will be best for you.

Second this. Varsity track runner and they are holding up very well in rain, track and uneven track. Also with Nikes they tend not to test on americans. The reason this matters is if the shoes is designed with someone else's shape than yours you'll end up with chin splints, and other muscle pain. It's even bigger deal if ( like me) you have high arches because the affects that normally a minimal keep adding on and on.

Repeating again, agree 100% and so it does not get lost...

@CrabbittMom said it all with Superfeet.

At least give them a try - they are like magic feet for me, but DD didn't really like them all that much. Again, try everything you can!
