Banking-- Where to go?

luvs2swim: you were misinformed...we went through this last year. You need to call back and get a manager. Tell them your child is a cadet candidate and you wish to set up the account now. You will be able to do so...we had to jump through some extra hoops...but it worked out. You should not have to convert to anything; you should get what you need from day 1.

You need to mention that you need a 1199 form filled out by them, and signed. That's what it took to get the ball rolling for DS the minor, till this summer when he leaves. They set everything up over the phone and faxed
the signed form out with all the info filled out. She also mailed a copy for security. :thumb:

Thanks all, for the info and comments

DS made the call this time as he is 18. After some initial false starts, he did get everything set up over the phone and we faxed the 1199 to them, which they will fax or mail back to us. The initial confusion seemed to be that my son very correctly said "I have accepted an appointment to West Point" but it took awhile to clarify that he really will be there as a cadet in a couple of months and needed this set up now. He explained that he had been told by West Point Admissions to set this up in advance, and even was asked to name his admissions counselor. That seemed to finally do the trick. He will not have the military benefits of the account until June 29 when he really becomes military - he will need to then change his status via the web. Whether this is correct or not, we are not going to argue, as we have what we want...a checking account at USAA with an ATM card in the mail. He plans to set up his summer job direct deposit into the new account as well.

My son uses USAA and has nothing but great things to say. In fact I may be changing from Chase to USAA. I would love to know of the "horror" stories you've been told.
