BCT 2 Marksman

Is his assignment really that great? I've been shying away from branching an Engineering AFSC because I really don't want to be stuck at a desk state side my entire AF career. Can a 62EX get an overseas assignment? How rare is it?
I would say the scientist/engineer career field has very few overseas assignments, so if that is your only goal, then it would be a poor choice. However, I absolutely love working in the acquisitions community. It is pretty cool to be right at the front of the development of a new piece of technology, working to make their lives safer and easier.

Honestly, I would shy away from choosing any career field based on the possibility of an overseas assignment, it may never happen regardless. I only have 1yr of experience in the lab and am a 61, but I know and work with a lot of 62s if you have questions.

I had assignments as a 61x for most of my time. First assignment included repeated trips to Greenland in winter to launch sounding rockets. Not a desk in sight. Third assignment at WPAFB was an electro-optics engineer, including trips to Germany for facilities camo (CCD) evaluations. Fifth assignment included repeated trips to Germany and Italy for weapons safety evaluations. And, lastly, my seventh assignment was 3 years at Ramstein on the operational planning staff at 3 AF.

Yeah, I did my desk time. But you can create so many opportunities. If your talents are engineering, then you should do what you enjoy.
