Could anyone who has attended Bear's day give me some insight on what goes on? I just received an invitation to attend today. Is this significant? I am considering going in December. Any insight is appreciated!

I’m wondering the same thing. My DD got an invite also but we would traveling across the country so would be nice to know some details ahead of time.

I'm sure you've probably seen this description in your Bears Den Account. "Bears Day is a program for high school Juniors and Seniors interested in learning more about the Academy experience, specifically academics, military instruction, and cadet life through an admissions brief, campus tour, lunch in the cadet wardroom, and a class audit. This is an opportunity to shadow a cadet and join other high school students to see first-hand what a typical day at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is like. By the end of this experience students will be well prepared to make a decision to apply or attend the Academy. Programming and information for parents will also be provided throughout the day including, but not limited to, an exclusive campus tour. Parent participation is optional. "

At a recent Academy Admissions Partner briefing, CGA said that they will likely NOT be doing any overnight visits this year, so Bears Day will be your best chance to get a closer look at what a typical class would be like. It is not the same as overnight visits where you would have been staying with a cadet and shadowing them all day long, but it is probably the best chance you will have this year. If you have already visited campus, then you will have to decide if it is worth it for you, especially if it is across the country.

If you search this forum you will see other people asking about Bears Day as well. If you come, please reach out to any coaches ahead of time you would like to visit. Let your Admissions Officer know you will be coming. Ask if it is possible to meet with the department head or a teacher in your desired major. Have questions ready for the student who is hosting you for class and lunch. It is up to you to make the visit as beneficial as possible.

Sporting events are allowed spectators this year as well (please see the spectator policy), so depending on which Bears Day you register for, you might be able to also attend a CGA sporting event that day or the next. Just something else to think about, especially if the trip is not local. This is a calendar of all varsity sports https://www.uscgasports.com/composite (club sports are not listed).

Have other days been announced? We only see the one on September 10th. Since we are coming from the West Coast, we need to plan ahead a little further than that. Thank you.

There are 4 dates. September 10th, October 15th, November 5th, and December 3rd. I believe they all take place on Fridays.

Thank you. We have the invitation to the one in September, but not the others. Does this mean we aren’t invited or it just hasn’t been posted yet?

I would contact someone in admissions regarding that. I assume an invitation to one is an invitation to all. I found out about the dates through an invitation I received via email.

Unfortunately we didn’t receive an email. The invitation in the profile is only for September 10. Just not enough time to coordinate from the west coast, but she would love to attend a later date.

Contact admissions. They are the only ones that can tell you if another date is open to you. There will be limits because of covid protocols.

We tried to sign up about 24 hours after receiving the email invitation. The September 10 date was open but the other 3 dates were already full. We were able to register for the wait list for each of the remaining dates. September 10 was just not enough time to rearrange school and work schedules and get travel including flights arranged. We are hoping one of the other three sessions opens up but if not we did sign up for the virtual session in November.

Well, there goes my plans! Wanted to wait until I could reliably say I could attend. Did you contact admissions?

oh no! I was just trying to figure out which session would be best and they’re all full! I sent an email to find out how to get on the waitlist. Any ideas?

How important ore different do you think these in person or virtual sessions will be if my DS son did AIM this past summer? I know more info is never a bad idea but seems like they went through most of the same things during AIM.

My daughter even attended a Bears Day after she submitted her application and I feel like it was beneficial to her and the academy. She attended AIM, two of the admissions events held in our state and a Bears Day. It gave her a better idea of what a day was like at the academy during a winter month (the event was in December) and she was able to attend a class with a cadet. She also met with other important staff during the Bears Day event.

Thanks so much momoftwo... very good insight. We were leaning that way but your info helps a ton!
