I am a future midshipman who wants to become a career SWO(N) officer. I originally planned on majoring in Nuclear Engineering (I desire something that is theoretical/requires imagination and involves a lot of chemistry), but I want to open my eyes to other, possibly better, options. I want a major that, out of Annapolis' majors, is the best for preparing for Nuke Power School.

In addition to what pops up here, you will receive great information once there, via major briefs/open houses, upperclass, mentors, and professors. You will be able to make an informed decision. It’s one of the strengths of USNA, imo….great exposure to different majors.

Well, the "best" major is subjective. I've known history, poly sci, english, and all the engineering disciples that have gone to nuclear power school from USNA. What will help you in nuke power school is the ability to learn a vast amount of complex information while hooked up to a fire hose. It isn't the major, it's the student.

My son’s best friend was a chemistry major that wanted marines - listed all three choices as marines. They gave him swo (n). He did very well in chemistry.

I think it is important to do well in whatever you major in.

Was there any particular reason why he wasn’t picked up for USMC?

I want to be a SWO(N) too and I was advised by officers here that there is no true major for power school. The best thing to prepare for Nuke school is doing well in your STEM classes and excelling in them. You can be an English major and still select SWO nuke if you perform well in your STEM classes. I am a computer engineering major and was told I am fine to go Nuke even with my major. I chose a major I am passionate about and interested in! t

I'd also add to not come in with a 100% service selection idea in mind. It will change. You will go to SO many briefs here and opportunities to talk to various communities. I never thought I would be interested in Nuke SWO until I went the coolest brief ever with the coolest officers. I also went to a super interesting Marine brief and that has moved up on my list for sure! Still scared of heights though...

My DD 2019 grad was an English major, did a semester in Morocco, and is Nuke SWO, finished Power School last year and did well there. She did say it was one of the hardest things she has ever done academically but her husband who is also 2019 USNA Nuke SWO (but chem major) said the same thing!
