AFROOTC does not do tier majors. They separate them by tech and non-tech. Major in what you will be successful in regardless. Here's why:
1. Your cgpa will be used as part of the selection for Summer Field Training (SFT).
~ Avg cgpa for tech is 3.0/3.1 and 3.3/3.4 for non-tech.
~ AFOQT will also be a part of selection.
NO SFT = no commissioning
2. There are times when AFPC will say certain majors in the tech field are mission critical and than if that occurs, they will limit the amount of those majors for rated.
~ As a freshmen your major may not be considered critical, but 2 years later it could be, thus your planning has gone awry.
3. Rated selection will include more than just your major and your cgpa. The playing field can level our between a tech and non-tech major based on the other portions for rated selection boards.
~ AFOQT, TBAS, CoC rec, PFT, ranking out of SFT, and flight hours.
Finally, your slate is wiped clean at UPT. Nobody cares what your major was, and I have seen just as many non-tech majors get fighters as tech majors. It becomes more about handling the stick than your academic background.
~ Caveat: Many will say tech majors do have an edge in the very beginning, because in the beginning it is academics....lots and lots of tests.
Hope that helps.
