Best Naval Movies

Flags of our Fathers, The Pacific (TV series), and Lone Survivor are very good.

Also, Letters from Iwo Jima was good. It was an interesting view of WWII from the Japanese perspective (a Clint Eastwood film).

I thin I have seen most of the movies mentioned here and they are all good. Annapolis is not realistic, but more of a drama/romance confection.
One not yet mentioned, I think, is The Fighting Seabees, a WWII era John Wayne movie about how the seabees got their start. I think it is fairly accurate, if also a home front propaganda piece.

Page 3 of this string and no one mentioned Top Gun or Officer and a Gentleman???

Must see!!!

I'm suprised no one has mentioned "Battleship" starring rihanna and liam neeson... NOT!!

Which reminds me... the Marines being a department of the Navy (the men's dept.) I would think "Battle: Los Angeles" would be fair to include here.

"The Wind and the Lion"

Kinnem's comment notwithstanding, the Marine (and sailor) attack on the palace in Tangier is a classic and one of my favorites in all of cinema. It was shown many times during Basic School as an "attention getter" prior to a lecture.

"The Last Detail"

Not sure if prisoners are escorted much like this anymore, but I have certainly seen it over the years.

Gallipoli is also possibility.

Dardanelles was a naval campaign although the movie is more about the amphibious assault.

Gung Ho with Randolph Scott...

My Dad was an ensign (90 day wonder) then a Lt on a minesweeper in WWII - a YMS. I remember watching movies with him as a kid on t.v. Sunday afternoons. He loved the Caine Mutiny, both for the action scenes and the court martial scenes (the Caine was a minesweeper, though not a YMS). Great movie (I read the book when I was older - even better than the movie). My dad was in a typhoon like the one in the movie, scared the heck out of him. I also remember watching They Were Expendable with him. Another great movie. Also Run Silent, Run Deep and PT-109 (saw it in the movies) both great. Saw In Harms Way in the movies, somehow I remember being bored. For you merchant mariners, Action in the North Atlantic was great, those guys risked as much as the military, as their casualty rates showed. I read where surviving u-boat men said that they would gladly serve under the captain in Das Boot, another great movie. If you want a sci-fi mix of modern navy and WWII era, try The Final Countdown. Not bad.
I watched Annapolis on dvd. Turned it off after 10 minutes.

What are some great books on the Navy - not made into movies?

"Sea of Thunder" by Evan Thomas. Should have been a movie. Perhaps the story was a movie prior to his book.
