Hi All -

I have heard a lot about Boys/Girls State over the past few months, and several mentions of adding WCS Points to the application. DS and I have looked into it, and he has a very strong possibility (verbal guarantee) of getting in.

SS of course directly conflicts with Boys State for him, and while he is trying to move SS, that is not a given.

So. . .My question is this. . .From the searching I have done, it appears to me that WCS points are referring to West Point applications. Is this true, or is it all Service Academy applications?

DS will definitely go to Boys State over SS, as he has been to USNA a few times to visit DD and coaches, but just trying to ascertain if it is true that attendance does actually add points. Is this adding proverbial points, meaning it is a good thing to see on an application, or there a numerical formula being used to 'bucketize' candidates?

It adds points to the leadership section I believe. I read somewhere ( may or may not be true) that attending Boys State can provide up to 40% of the leadership wcs points. My son is looking forward to it this summer.

FWIW, USNA does not actually use the term "WCS" (Whole Candidate Score) and instead uses "WPM" (Whole Person Multiple).

If Summer Seminar conflicts with Boys State, ask USNA to move to a different week. They are very familiar with candidates who want to do
both and can often make it possible to do both.

This is a great question! We didn't know you get points for Girls State. My son attended Boy's State and now attends USMMA. Last summer, my DD was invited to attend Governor's School. It's a pretty big deal to attend Governor's School as only 2 students out of all our county high schools were chosen for academics not arts. It conflicted with Girls State since Governor's School is a month long event in the summer held at a college campus. Since she didn't get points for Girls State, would there be any reward for begin chosen to go to Governor's School? She was able to attend NASS and AFSS (online) but within days of leaving NASS she had to begin her month at Governor's School. Last summer was a whirlwind experience and we hoped would build her resume for USNA and she truly enjoyed all of the experiences. I'm wondering now if not attending Girls State was a mistake.

It sounds like Governor's School is really selective. Fewer chosen for that than for Boys/Girls State. If she can articulate the value of the program and what leadership skills she learned while attending, it can only be positive. Not necessarily 'points' per se, but valuable.
