I believe it has been fielded at least for trial, in the Middle East, but I'm not positive on that, and have no support for that claim.

But I'm with you on that, it would definitely be a great asset and make combat operations in urban enviroments more feasible and safer in the future.

I'm almost possitive that FCLAS or something similar to it is in use on Abrams and mobile artillery units. I don't think it would work on a Javelin though, as they come from a more verticle angle.

I have a feeling that helicopters would be the first to go when fighting an advanced enemy. More so than tanks or artillery. I'm interested to know how helicopters plan to stay in the sky with the advancements in target tracking systems in missiles.

Yeah helicopters seem like they would be dead meat, even in scenarios where we have control of the air because they are really vulnerable to ADA being so low and slow (compared to jets)

Helicopters

Transport Helos make a lot of sense...but attack helos like the Apache may not. The Warthog seems to be our most effective close air support system...but they are getting old. I have a feeling that in ten years we will be a mostly pilotless airforce. Keep playing those video games kids.

Once the two BlackHawks were shot down and things went to hell, I'm sure they would've like the support too. The division was supposed to have an AC-130,(and was it extra armored vehicles too?) but nobody followed through on it at upper HQ, I believe.

But it did take quite a while for that armored relief column to reach those surrounded Rangers.

Not that it wasnt followed though on, but Powell and the Pentagon deemed it too "provocative" to have a Spectre and any other support, so TFR ends up with only 450 guys.

Off topic, I know.

I dunno about pilotless, but the F-35's will have probably replaced most of the A10's and F22's by then.

I don't know much about planes, but my understanding is that the A10 is much better at CAS than the fighter jets. Its excellent at flying low and slow and has weapon systems much better equipped for close air support like its chain gun.
