Bucket list before plebe summer

So I'm having trouble enjoying my senior year when all I can really think about is being at the academy and being surrounded by like-minded people and making life long friendships. Part of me feels like I have already moved past high school, but I know when I get there I am going to wish I enjoyed high school more.
I was wondering if there is any sort of bucket list ideas that I should try to do before I turn my life to the military. I need something fun to focus on to keep myself focused on high school and to help me enjoy the rest of my senior year, because time is going to FLY!
Any ideas would be appreciated:) Of course nothing illegal or that would jeopardize my appointment!

Read for fun, go on a family vacation (leave the electronics), go hiking, take as many naps under you even covers as possible (you will learn what this all means later), visit with friends, have as many pizza and movie nights with your family as possible.

Most kids in your spot are so excited for the future as you forge ahead to adulthood, being on your own, college, etc. Its okay to be that way. Its hard to take a deep breathe and enjoy the moment. But try to!

How about a don't......Don't go crazy and do something stupid that is gonna mess the whole thing up for you! Sounds ridiculous but a few make that mistake every year,
drugs, drinking, fighting, sex you name it.

Steady as she goes, hold the course!

Something on my list is go on a bunch of hikes with my family and grandmother. She loves to hike and I know that she will not be able to do that much longer. Another thing I am going to do is build a rowing scull. I haven't been accepted yet but I am just enjoying my freedom and trying not to obsessively check my portals.

Yosemite or any other National Parks. Your Grandmother will love Yosemite and walking around it is easy. Loved it with my kids before they took the big step. Hard to get into but plan early. Great Post

Also, try and enjoy these great moments with family/friends a little while before I-Day. I was so nervous the week before I-Day that I barely even thought about the people around me, even though they were trying to spend time with me.

The above post made me think of The Utilitarian Bucket List:

- laundry
- stain treatment
- ironing
- shoe shining
- button sewing
- tricks like taping up a pants hem
- iron-on patches
- shoe-shining
- basic finances, reconciling online bank statement, understanding fees, how credit cards work, budgeting, needs vs wants
- booking own air travel
- how to address snail mail and where the stamp goes
- understanding the phone plan, whether family or solo
- list of birthdays and key dates for phone or other device

Sprinkle these in with the fun stuff.

Thank you guys!! These are all good ideas. Of course I'm going to stay away from peer pressure of partying and what not and have fun in a good way! Also going to try not to do anything that could get me injured during this time

@navyafgirl I was recently appointed to USAFA, and I've been feeling the same way as you! I can't wait to get back there!

Right now I'm just trying to spend as much time as possible with my family and friends and enjoy the little moments. I've been told to take it all in while I can! I know I'll miss it during BCT this summer.

Good luck to you!

I am in the same exact spot, except I will be going to The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. For now, I am just trying to sit back and relax, enjoy time with my family and close friends, do fun things (went to the fair last month, pretty fun!), and make my grades my top priority.

I think we just need to remember to slow down a bit and try our best to enjoy these last 8 months or so (not sure when you go, I go in August 2017). Best of luck in all you do - you will go on to accomplish great things, I can tell!

hate to say it but if you think you are feeling apart from your friends now, it is nothing like you will feel after plebe summer, by the time you come home for Christmas you will wonder if they are from the same planet as you.

Funny how it works though about the end of Youngster year when my my son started talking about getting "Home", and he didn't mean our house, he is always anxious to get back to the yard, and "Mother Bancroft"

Exactly! And most of my friends don't understand how I feel because none of them want to go to the academy or they have not been accepted yet. So it's either hard feelings or they just don't get it haha
Yes I know I'll for sure miss it during Plebe Summer but it's so hard to just sit back and enjoy each moment of the day... I am trying though!
Congrats on USAFA!! It's beautiful there.

Which is part of the reason I think I am feeling apart from them now... I know in the future I am going to make amazing long-lasting friendships with my classmates at the academy and I am most likely going to drift apart from my friends here in high school because of the different experiences we'll have had, etc.

Congrats! Thank you, same to you! I have about 7 months left.... oh my I do really need to enjoy my time here!

My DS spent his last few months learning a non-contact sport just for fun.

Swimming lessons at the local Y or county pool, if you are at all uncertain or worried. No need to get in race condition, but to work on confidence and comfort if needed. There are plenty of threads about swimming. If you are already a confident swimmer, don't worry about it.

My poor roomie at OCS had to go to "Stupid Swim" (the nicknames back then were not as gentle as "EI" [extra instruction] or "remedial") at 0545 every day. The point being, as a plebe, you want to be "sat" across the board, and not have to spend precious time working on a skill you could have previously acquired.

For the next six months, focus on finishing your senior year strong. Continue to be the student leader you have been to date. Continue to do well in class. Continue to excel on the athletic field. Go out (of h.s.) with a bang, not a whimper.

Once you've graduated, be sure to stay in shape, especially running. It's easy to become lazy and then PS will be harder than it needs to be. As for what else you do, I took a cake-decorating course. If there's something short-term that has always interested you, do it. If not, just relax and enjoy the stuff you like to do but don't have time for during the school year. USNA isn't the end of your life. :) Meaning you don't have to do everything on your bucket list before PS.

Finally, as others have said, don't do something stupid. Drinking, drugs, vandalism, etc.
