C/O 2019 Mailbox Stalkers

USNA commits to let everyone know by April 15. That typically means every candidate has some sort of letter in hand (BFE, TWE, WL) by April 15 (not that they're mailed out that day).

I would not be surprised if WP is "pressuring" you b/c, quite understandably, they are trying to figure out their yield. Here's the question to ask yourself -- if you get an appointment to or are WL'ed by USNA, will you turn down your WP appointment? If yes, then wait. If not, then commit now to WP. You have to make the decision at some point and there isn't much more info about the two options that will suddenly appear between now and May 1 (USNA commitment date).

If you're WL'ed to USNA, my recommendation would be to accept WP. There is no guarantee you will come off USNA's WL. In some prior years, up to 35 have ultimately received appointments. More recently, the number has been zero or close to it. With the smaller class size and the focus this year on yield, I would expect there to be relatively few people selected from the WL. So, if you'd rather go to WP than your third option, I'd take it. [Note: the prior comment re the WL is my personal view and does NOT necessarily reflect USNA Admissions position.]

No news yesterday. I am feeling the squeeze from USMA to commit. My offer expires on 4/15.

If I do not hear from USNA or am waitlisted by then I will be in a really tough spot.

This is 9 years of my life and I want to have all if the options on the table before I decide.

Is anyone else in the same situation?

Yes, we are in the same situation. DS went to Founders Day dinner though and was able to speak to many there that have walked the path he wants to follow. It was a great event and very helpful to making the decision.

Good Luck!

The National Association of College Admissions Counseling puts out a "Statement of Students' Right and Responsibilities in the College Admissions Process" which states (in part):
"When You Are Offered Admission:
• You have the right to wait until May 1 to respond to an offer of admission and/or financial aid
• Colleges that request commitments to offers of admission and/or financial assistance prior to May 1 must clearly offer you the opportunity to request (in writing) an extension until May 1. They must grant you this extension and your request may not jeopardize your status for admission and/or financial aid
• Candidates admitted under early decision programs are a recognized exception to the May 1 deadline."

Maybe a call to WP AC-equivalent to discuss an extension and whether there is a necessity for a written letter? I would suggest a thoughtful reason for the requested extension that doesn't make WP feel like they are second choice.

Thank you @usna1985. If waitlisted at USNA I plan to take USMA.

I also understand that USMA needs an answer as there are many qualified candidates out there who are just as deserving of my spot.

It is encouraging that you think I will have an answer by 4/15 from USNA.

Meanwhile I am plowing to the list of required documents and getting all of the information together so I can send it in a timely manner.

@JShawshank. I called. There will be no extension of the USMA past midnight EST on 4/15.
My best hope is that I will hear from USNA by 4/14.

I have no idea why, but for some reason I have lost hope.
Your post made me so sad. Oddly, today I also felt really hopeless about this process because my DS has simply not been himself. I can't stand the "daily mailbox moment". I think: Ugh…another day of watching him wait…BUT…on the positive side, it's also another day without the TWE. Feel frustrated or even a little angry with the wait…but don't lose hope yet!

The same here...everyday without receiving a TWE is a good day, even though the wait is tiring and stressful!

We are feeling the same way. Much of the excitement of the possibilities has waned. Three service academy apps in and no news. It's hard to imagine it will end positively with an appointment for DS at this point. We've stopped stalking. And maybe that's part of the journey too. Maybe we will just be relieved to have any news by the time some news comes.

Very tired here in PA too...more tired of the "hey did you find out yet?" from relatives... But I am glad USNA is taking the time to make decisions carefully. Definitely working on alternate plans and no longer fearing the TWE because at this point at least it's news to move forward with.

Hey all, I haven't posted anything in a while but I'm still hanging on. Today I recieved an extremely rare academic scholarship from U of I. Because of this scholarship and my ROTC scholarship I can now go there for next to nothing. Unfortunately, I can not imagine myself there or even begin to plan on going there until I find out. I know they promise news by April 15th but am I the only one who feels like that day will come and go without any change?

Through my observations arose my epiphany, and my solace.

Last Spring DS attended CVW and NASS. During his time there I had the opportunity to meet parents and their DS’--all outstanding young men. Before CVW several parents, and our DS’s got together for dinner before check in. It was heartwarming to watch the boys instantly click…as if they’ve known each since grade school. After checking the kids in some of the parents met up and had appetizers, beverages and long conversations, and for that I am truly grateful; I met some wonder people and to this day we still stay in contact. During the day I toured the Yard and I found that if an opportunity presented itself I became fascinated with observing the candidates and midshipmen. While walking around I never intended to learn as much as I did through my observations, and as an unintentional consequence here’s what I took away from it: All, and I mean ALL, those kids had “it.” Not one candidate attending looked out of place; all had the same determination, motivation, and uniqueness to join the ranks of the c/o2019. And to be quite frank, IMHO, each and every one of them deserved a spot.

After returning home from NASS I received a call from a friend of mine, she asked how DS’ experience was at CVW and NASS. I chuckled and told her point blank, next Spring if DS doesn’t receive an offer of appointment to kick me in the rear end if I’m whining about an injustice. She was taken aback and asked, “why?” I expressed to her that there were 800+ kids just like DS, and I sure wouldn’t want the task of determining who receives an offer and who doesn’t. After my time on the Yard I adamantly believe Admissions knows how fill a class with a diverse group of future officers to meet the needs of the Navy, and have a greater appreciation for the difficulty of their job. Fast forward to present day. I’m honored that DS is still in the game. Also, for those of us who have a DS or DD that are still waiting to hear, it will be a disappointment if the dreaded TWE arrives, but I assure you it’s not because they aren’t qualified—they are.

My DS is still dedicated to his academics, sports, and ECA’s. He knows if he decides to apply again next year he can’t let up to have his class rank drop. He has the best plan possible if he’s not offered an appointment, a 4-year NROTC scholarship (along with a Trustee scholarship that will cover room and board.) I’m not troubled about DS receiving a TWE, just inpatient. After all, I was (my family would say I still am) the child who on Christmas Eve would sneak out of bed when everyone had fallen asleep and peek at my presents. :)

I’m hoping and praying all receive BFE’s, but if not keep in mind your DS or DD most certainly has “it,” and will go on to make a difference in this crazy world of ours.

Keep the faith.

*note: While at the Academy I did some research for a family friend who had several ancestors who attended the USNA circa 1871. If you like Naval Academy history I suggest going to archives up on the third floor of the library.
