Taking my son to tour the academy this summer. Can anyone recommend the best time to visit from their own experiences?

Mine did an overnight visit in mid to late August before Junior year. He had contacted them in spring, and admissions told him it wouldn’t be possible to do a visit before that timeframe due to indoctrination.

I would highly recommend an overnight for a real taste of plebe life. They are paired with a plebe and have the chance to attend classes, which made a huge impression on DS. He was initially shocked by the restrictions on the plebes but was very excited about all the opportunities at KP. He went all in on his USMMA application and was able to use the experience to craft his essays. He’s looking forward to reporting to indoc this July!

I agree with @RDsMom. Definitely visit while classes are in session and not just prior to exams. A day visit is good, but an overnight is much better. If you go in August, you will get a glimpse of the hell that is plebe year before recognition.

To parents who want to get info about life at KP while your DS/DD is visiting: Yes, go to the standard information sessions, read the entire catalog, ask administrators questions, etc. But best of all, find a 10-20 year civilian employee, especially a maintenance man or ATR secretary, and ask "What's it like?" Then close your mouth and open your ears for the next 20 minutes.

Captain who (2019 grad) is presenting my son with his appointment has offered to meet us for lunch prior to awards day and discuss all things KP. We were able to talk with him for about 30 minutes on the phone. He was very gracious with his time and were are so very grateful. EVERYONE we have talked/texted/messaged from KP has been very giving of their time.

They have a pre orientation day for the incoming class in May. Find out when it is and show up. You get to walk around the Zoo and check out the classes, see the regiment for formation at morning colors and lunch formation.

Told ya. We're a tight group.

Can you better define "lunch prior to awards day" as I may be on campus.

Do you mind me asking how you were put in contact with this person? Was it thru the email address they sent w/ the appointment? I’m trying to find one for my DS - started with our Parents Association but that may not work out….

This graduate of USMMA lives not far from us (which is why he is able to present my DS at his High School awards day). He offered to meet us so we can talk.

It was a regional parent facebook group. One grad responded to me, says he does it when he can and would put me in touch with a grad that lives nearer to us. Within a few hours this individual contacted me! I completed the request for a presenter that came with his appointment but I really doubted they would send someone from NY here.... So like a good mom (with skills of an FBI detective LOL) I started thinking about how I could make this happen. I figured Admission folks probably would reach out to NPA folks anyway... the southeast parents facebook group I thought was my best option as we are not members of NPA yet.

Thank you for the info 😊! Our FB tried! Just seems like it’s hard to fill… Have a great awards night!!

DD visited the 2nd week in August 2023. She got to KP mid-day and they immediately introduced her to one of the women on the basketball team. DD went to classes (including a class that the player had aboard ship), club meetings, meals, and a shoot around that the player had in her schedule for the day and then back to the barracks to meet others and study/sleep. Then DD participated in the morning routine with the player and we met back up around 13:00 in Admissions for the Parent's Brief.

For my husband and me, after DD went off with the player, we met up with the Coaches and had a very nice tour of the campus. We saw most of the buildings and got an in-depth history of the campus and met a lot of very nice people.

I highly suggest, %100, to do the overnight. It'll give your son an idea of Regimental Life and it'll help him decide if the Academy is what he wants to pursue. Good luck!!!
