Ive been offered NAPS after being told in right on the line of going direct and getting a prep offer. Im sending in a few extras like an updated resume with some fluff about leadership positions as well as updating the academy that ive been invited to National Honor society and that Im now in the top 25% in my class.

Is there any possibility that my offer can be updated to a direct offer? Im a principal Nominee if that helps with anything.

^ Not sure what that means.

"Any possibility" ? Can't hurt to ask, but frankly "fluff leadership positions," National Honor Society and top 25% aren't likely to move the bar much.... NAPS is a great opportunity and will prepare you for success at USNA

Because you are a principal nominee, and if a principal nominee is fully qualified, they are usually offered an appointment, USNA no doubt looked extra hard at your application. They have not found you fully qualified but are confident they want to save you a seat in 2029. This is not offered to many.

Grab that golden ticket. You now have a seat waiting for you, an abbreviated internal application process, excellent academic preparation, introduction to Navy culture, customs, routines, language, have a year to mature and get over homesickness, will build bonds with friends who will go with you to USNA, have another nom source due to your enlisted status, free room and board - just complete the course successfully and stay medically fit.

Pause a moment to rejoice and sink into the knowledge you are going to USNA after taking a NAPS lap. You will not be teetering at grave’s edge or be the oldest in the class.

USNA can do whatever it wishes, so of course they could convert this to a direct offer, if you were somehow on the cusp of a decision line. Just ready for NAPS (assuming you want USNA) and let everything play out.

im assuming not-in a rare case someone can be offered direct, but I mean its RARE. But it kind of stinks bc the academy doesn't necessarily have to accept u if ur a principal nominee

X2 of Old navy BGO. Doesn't hurt to try, but not sure how much consideration you will get at this time of the process. NAPS is a great opportunity and a great step to success at USNA. Don't think of it as a let down.

I asked my AO and i just figured id ask the Forum while I await a response.

and by fluffing my leadership positions i just put stuff before that my unit has done this under my command(ex. Fundraised $100,000 for a paid for trip, 4500 hours of community service, and then other unit stuff). My AO said that I was right on the line, only thing that held my back was my SAT(690 math, 590 ELA), and that i had a C in AP Chem and Honors algebra(That my counselor wrote a letter about some issues i was facing during that year. This year I took 3 Maths and had As in all of them, AP Finite, AP Precalc, AP Calc AB)

.
The Academy can be brutal. The extra year at NAPS will toughen you up — academically, physically, and mentally. NAVY* is giving you more time to develop. This is a very positive thing.

Follow CaptMJ's advice:

GRAB THE GOLDEN TICKET FROM NAPS!!!

My DD is so thankful to have that extra year to prepare AND make great friends who will be there on InDoc day!

I don't know the answer to your question, but I did want to say congrats on NAPS!!I know you were really hoping for direct appointment for 2028 but hopefully once you have time to process the news, you'll start the notice the gold in the offer. Are you comfortable sharing what made you borderline (either in your view or what you were told by your AO)? I think my DS is possibly on the line too ... makes all the various outcomes and possibilities that much more uncertain (or so it seems!). Good luck to you! And just remember - USNA WANTS YOU!!!

Yeah, so im a principal Nominee, 1280 SAT(690 math, 590 Eng), Im top 25% of my class, I had an A in AP Pre calc, Calc AB, Finite, Geometry, AP Lang, AP Lit, and other classes. B in AP Physics 1 and a C in AP Chem 1. Those are my most notable classes but others Are mostly As.

If you have any other questions just PM me

Congratulations on the NAPS offer. Take it ... it's a golden ticket if you complete the year.

I 100% will, it just feels weird because I was a principal nominee and all i needed to be was 3Q and i was right on the line. Im still hoping something changes but if not Ill still be happy to attend naps and hopefully join 2029

Thank you so much for sharing! Your stats look awesome to me! I guess the upside of being so close to qualified is that hopefully NAPS won’t be overly stressful! It is so mysterious how all of this works but at least you know they really want you! Congrats!!

Look on the bright side. You have the golden ticket in hand. You have really good stats, but that wouldn’t have received a nomination at all in my district, much less a principal one.

Don’t plan on it changing. The extra you have can be sent in, but honestly I don’t see it changing the outcome. Something on your resume doesn’t meet the criteria they are looking for to qualify you. NAPS is a great place to start for USNA and will shore up any gaps you have.

Here is what I don’t understand about why you are asking admissions for any reconsideration. Your admissions officer told you that the issue was on the academic side…nothing you are sending in shows increased SAT/ACT scores or overcoming the “C” in Chemistry. I would also have questions if your STEM grades weren’t correlating to your SAT math score…one is high and the other is lower…this might be why they want you to go to NAPS.

Agree with others, just take the NAPS.

Im not trying to sound ungrateful, I was literally just asking a question. Im not really seeing your point about the STEM grades correlating with SAT, because just like the other vets on here have said, grades aren't much because every teacher is different. Whats odd for me is Ive taken the hardest English courses in my school and Aced all of them, yet my English SAT is sub par. Its basically the inverse of what you're saying. Respectfully.

The updated information that you provided your admissions officer DOESN’T address the deficiency your admissions officer cited to you…so I’m not sure how you want them to revisit their decision if the new information doesn’t directly address what you have been told. One of the reasons candidates are sent to NAPS is if SAT/ACT testing scores doesn’t completely align with some academic courses…I’m just offering you a reason on why they might be pushing you over to NAPS.
