Hi, I received the following correspondence in my portal today;

The Admissions Office has received all your information and the Admissions Committee has reviewed your application. You have been found fully qualified and placed on the national waiting list. Several hundred cadetships will be filled from this waiting list with most appointments being made between 1 March, 2024 and 1 May, 2024. You are still competing for admission and should continue to update your record with significant achievements in academic, leadership, and extracurricular and athletic activities. Additionally, please ensure your school provides your seventh semester transcript to the Admissions Office as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. You will be notified immediately of any change in your status. Final selection from the waiting list may be made only a few days before the class enters. Thank you for your continuing interest in West Point, and good luck in your efforts to gain admission.

I received a principal nomination from my district rep. The letter states that I have been waitlisted, yet from my knowledge a principal nominee is guaranteed an appointment if they are 3Q'd???
I'm wondering what this means for me?

I got a Pnom too and was placed on the National Waiting List. From my knowledge it’s a list that compiles all the 3Q candidates until they get appointed. You have a great chance of appointment with the pnom—this is not something to be concerned about imo.

The NWL isn't like a normal college waitlist. All 3Q candidates with nominations are put on the NWL. You have nothing to worry about, especially with that Principal Nomination.

Is this situation unique to West Point, or does this NWL also happen with USNA?

I also thought that those who get PNom and are 3Q should get an appointment and not receive a NWL letter.

Everyone whose qualified goes on the NWL at some point. Slate winners, LOA recipients, and strong presidential nom candidates are usually the first ones taken off the NWL. Unless something crazy happens, @fullArmor808 will likely be receiving an appointment soon.

Hahaha my bad. I meant what is a principal nomination? I've gotten my nominations, but I've never heard of a "principal" nomination.

Most MOC don't rank candidates on nominations. If you don't see principal or alternative -- that means your MOC does not rank.

Go read the pinned post at the top of the Nominations forum.

Essentially, a principal nom requires the SA to offer the appointment to that candidate IF they are fully qualified, regardless of how the SA scores their application compared to others on the slate of up to 10 nominees. Fully qualified: medical/DoDMERB; athletic/CFA; academic-scholastic/all other graded elements.

My DS got the same letter back in October. He has a LOA (and now 2 nominations). To me it sounds like a holding place until they get through the paperwork and do the actual appointment. Sounds like you are in a similar place to my son. Crossing my fingers they start working through the list soon!!!!

What region are you in? We are Great Lakes.

Admissions should do everyone a favor and eliminate the term "National Waiting List" in the 3Q letter. It just confuses everyone. As mentioned above, there is no waiting list in the sense that most people understand the term.

You're still getting an appointment, the letter's just worded that way just due to how they organize applicants. The letter would only be different if you had an LOA; the wording just makes it more obvious that you're getting in but the outcome is the same as Pnom +3Q + your letter. Congrats on the soon to be appointment!

The wording we received is a bit different. This was after we received the nomination and the 3Q letter.

Maybe different RCs have different letter templates to respond with.

Congratulations! We have received all your application information and the Admissions Committee has qualified your file. You are exactly the type of outstanding candidate the United States Military Academy is seeking.

You received a Letter of Assurance based on the overwhelming strength of your file. West Point will begin tendering most appointments at the end of February 2024 and yours will be in the first wave of packets mailed out at that time.

Does this mean your CFA needs to reach a certain standard, or that it technically just needs to pass? I have Pnom for usna but I just got mild shin splints and am a bit worried it may affect my run time later next week.
