Car insurance

Does anyone know or have experience with how USAA (as this seems to be the preferred insurance company for Cadets) handles these issues (a Cadet borrowing another Cadet's car and getting into an accident, and if the owner's rate will increase due to this type of claim)?

USAA does not typically raise your rates for the first claim.

As mentioned in earlier posts, the insurance is for the car, not the person.

As long as the car and insurance owner gave permission, it shouldn't affect the premiums.

Does anyone know if car insurance companies will provide intermittent coverage to individuals enrolled in the service academies, since their access to a vehicle is limited to short periods of time when they are home throughout the year? It seems expensive to provide continuous coverage for 4 years, when they will only be driving a car at home a few weeks per year for the next 4+ years.

Since you mentioned that the car will be used for less time in a year or more. I think you should ask for multiple quotes from some independent insurance provider. If you want coverage for more than 1-2 year, you might get some extra discount over insurance on that. My friend has recently done his car insurance from *Edited* and had got a quiet good discount for loyalty and long term insurance cover. Why don't you research over that for more information about car insurance according to your requirements.

If you call USAA and don't get the answer that sounds appropriate from these responses - ask to speak to a supervisor. Occasionally, the first line person doesn't understand that USAA treats Mids/Cadets differently.

Nationwide has a special plan for military members away from home where they are covered at $0 cost to the policy holder, but they are covered when home.

I have seen this question every year - if you have a Cadet/Mid and your insurance agent only offers you the 'college student away'/'college student more than 100 miles away' discount - you really need to change your insurance carrier (as a general rule). For most people - taking advantage of what companies like USAA and Nationwide provide for covering Mids/Cadets equates to a few $100's per year. (I am certain other carriers have similar policies - I am just familiar with USAA and Nationwide.

OMG, drop your cadet's car insurance that you're paying for! Insurance follows the car and state laws in every state require car insurance, so if your cadet borrows a car, he/she is covered under the owners insurance. Once he/she gets his own car (junior year), have them buy a policy from USAA. Simple as that.
