CFA at CVW?

Good morning,

DS received an invitation to the January CVW. As he filled out the forms to accept the final question was something like "Would you like to complete your CFA during the CVW"? Yes/no question. Based on reading relevant threads here it's difficult to figure out if this is common. It seems as if these weekends are fairly packed with other activities and while we know that CFA is a part of NASS, we haven't seen any anecdotes of candidates completing a CFA during a CVW.

If it is common and we missed it, it's time to start the Rocky-like training montage at our house

I should have mentioned this in the initial post - DS is a junior. This would be his first CFA if it takes place.

Does anyone have any experience with CFAs being administered during CVW? Thanks

Honestly this is the first I have heard of this even being offered. Be curious to follow this along his process and see if anyone does this. If your son isn’t in great shape, hasn’t practiced, is traveling a lot for the CVW I evaluate the pros and cons. It’s just a CVW but for many it is anxiety filled as it’s new, for some lots of travel. Also many sleep on cots, so I wouldn’t do it if they wait until day 2 for it. Just my thoughts and things to consider.

I went to CVW this past offering for the 2024 class, I didnot have an opportunity to conduct my CFA

January possible outside run in Annapolis + possible jet lag + uncertain food/sleep quality + unfamiliar test setting = the Magic Eight Ball says “conditions are not ideal.” Now, if the candidate has been practicing the CFA as administered and scoring well, is used to local weather, why not try to bang it out.

Thanks for the input folks. I can see this is going to be a long road. Of course, because he's 16 he said " I hit yes! I'm up for the challenge". I think he was concerned that saying no would look weak and didn't stop to think about what a poor CFA might say.

I was wondering if the reason that they are bringing up CFA at CVW might be the trend towards allowing kids to attend CVW or NASS and not both. If this is the "rule" now then it might make more sense.

Pretty sure USNA isn’t going though the trouble of seeing who’s “weak” by not taking the CFA at CVW. Do what’s right for you and don’t overthink it. If he takes it and struggles, he can do so again with adequate preparation. If he takes it and soars, consider it done.

This made me laugh, and for whatever reason, the phrase “operational risk management” popped into my head. Junior officers soon learn about ORM, assessing risks, evaluating a range of options, determining key factors to success, performing analysis on various possible outcomes, calculating the cost of failure, understanding how to optimize. Just for fun, I looked for the latest military teaching on this, and of course, a Marine training guide on ORM popped up. Some pro reading for your son!

My son completed his CFA at NASS in June 2019. He also attended a CVW in September 2019. No one completed the CFA during the CVW.

I surmise it is a new trend/offer for potential candidates/applicants.

I agree with the ever brilliant and resourceful, Capt MJ, regarding the conditions during CVW as being less than optimal with travel, etc., so I vote to choose a different time to complete the CFA.

Good luck!

Get back to us after CVW as it is clearly new to us!

This sounds like a new option. The advantage to taking the CFA at the CVW instead of NASS is there are usually fewer attendees at CVW, which means the mile run on the indoor track will not be packed full like at NASS. My 2/C still bristles over the fact that the slower runners clogged the inside lanes, forcing the track kids to take the longer orbit in the outside lanes. Regardless, the CFA is treated more like a learning experience (though the scores are recorded into the CIS portal). Candidates are encouraged to go home, train to improve their scores, and take it again on their home turf.

Haha!
I’m sure my mile time would have been 20 seconds faster if I could have used the inside lane.
Regardless, it was nice to get it out of the way in June so that I could focus on other things the rest of the summer.

Closing the loop on this question. They did NOT administer the CFA this past weekend at CVW. However, the officer in charge of the program did bring it up the first evening at the "welcome" briefing. He said something to the effect that " the facility where the CFA would have taken place was going to be used for a different scheduled event" and that therefore the CFA would not take place.

So - I do not know what that portends for the next CVWs if there are no scheduling conflicts on those weekends

As additional info, there was also no CFA administered during this past weekend's (Feb 20) CVW. However, DD did receive email notification a week or so prior to her visit that "Due to Staffing issues the Candidate Fitness Assessment will not be administered this weekend" so guessing that it's still a work in progress. Hopefully a March CVW Candidate will chime in afterwards next month.
