I have been accepted to CGAS for prospective class of 2023 as a recruited athlete, but there is very little info on what CGAS actually is besides the small section of the USCGA website. anyone have insight into what life is like at each school? I'd imagine Marion Military School is far different than UMASS Boston.

You are very fortunate to have this opportunity.

Recommend jumping onto the MMI website and reading every page, link and menu item. You’ll go to class in a curriculum geared to prepare you for service academy academics, you’ll be introduced to a military-style environment and you’ll have a busy schedule.

See link below, organize your questions and call LTC Bowen. They have been working with SA prepsters for a long time and will welcome you.

Call the CGA coach and ask if there is anyone on the team who went to MMI you could talk to.

CGAS is essentially a scholarship program to a partner prep school. If you successfully complete the program, you’ll have a seat in the Class of 2029.

Did you find this page? All kinds of info and contacts you can call.

Congrats. The coach recruiting my son mentioned that he wished all of his athletes could get the opportunity for a CGAS prep year. Just to adjust to the academic rigor in a military setting. I would feel great if he earned that option.

Our daughters coach had strong recommendations for where he would like her placed based on her file & sport (which is not offered during prep). He indicated he would be having the current recruit in cgas this year, be in contact with her so she can get a great idea of whats in store, what prep is like and how to move though the process. They're expected to connect during Christmas break. Lastly, I was able to connect with that prepsters mother and get a ton of info! If you haven't yet, peek at the FB scholars page, there's lots of info and real-time from the parents. With that in mind, we have a good idea of where would would "wish" for and it aligns with his rec.

I also feel great about earning this option. Coach let me know there is a slim chance to earn a direct appointment, but I am very happy with this outcome. Anyone have any insight into chances that happens? A good friend of mine is a sophomore right now and if I earned a direct appointment I could spend another year at the academy with him+he would be one of my cadre.

You DO NOT want one of your friends to be your cadre. You’d think it would be helpful, but it’s the opposite. Part of the job of the cadre is to break you down and they’ll use any little thing they can get their hands on and turn it against you. Seriously! Some of the stories from our 4/c this year after swab summer and even what she wrote in letters was nuts.

Her 18th birthday was halfway through swab summer and was in a Sunday which is usually one of the better days of the week. Someone in her platoon leaked that it was her birthday and it turned into the absolute worst day of her life. As a parent I tried to make myself believe she may have had a good day l, then after about a week we got a letter that crushed that thought. 😂

One of her shipmates has a sister who is a firstie. Again, you think it would be helpful. Just makes it worse. At least during swab summer. After that, everything’s cool.

Good luck and enjoy the rest of senior year knowing what you’re doing! It’s a great feeling! It’ll go so fast though!!

It’s also advantageous for both the team and the athlete. It’s like a redshirt year, a time for more physical development, only the athlete gets to play in games. Most athletes in D3 that USCGA will compete against will play 4 years, then graduate and move on. CGAS athletes will be a year older and in their 5th season when they are 1/C.

What are athletics life during scholars year?
I think it really depends on your sport. I believe they often will place you in a certain prep school depending on what your sport is. Sport options vary across the prep schools and some are more limited than others. You can probably get better/more current info from your future coach and whomever he may get you in contact with.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Thank you.
You should be proud of your accomplishments! I would suggest researching and connecting with others who have experienced CGAS. My DS is accepted to the class of 28' and will be joined by a friend who went to CGAS. They will be classmates. Ultimately they had different paths to USCGA but will arrive to the same challenges and opportunities by a slightly different course. You have been offered a rare and uniquely challenging opportunity. Take the time to reflect on your accomplishments and understand the opportunity before you. Those who have been there will be your best resource for information on what to expect. Rejoice! Such a great accomplishment!

Congratulations on your acceptance to CGAS! I am a current CGAS student at Naval Academy Preparatory School and can speak on the NAPS behalf. I found out in March that I was accepted as a Prep student and was assigned NAPS in June before CGAS started. We were sent a Google Form where we picked our top prep schools. All of the Coasties at NAPS are recruited athletes and were sent for athletics.
In a small insight as a Coastie at NAPS:
- Academics is the main priority and is the most rigorous.
- You will develop the most genuine bonds and friendships with your shipmates and find joy in the smallest things.
- NAPS is very Navy heavy, expect to be drowned in Naval Academy based information and Navy briefs.

Please let me know if you have any questions! I remember being accepted into CGAS and having trouble finding information about prep school and anxious about what to expect.

Yeah, having a similar experience. Since its such a small program its hard to find any info. Do all athletes get sent to NAPS? Did you get to choose your no. 1 prep school or did the CG decide for you? What paygrade are you given while in CGAS and how much of that comes out to pay for the schooling?

Do all athletes get sent to NAPS? NO. The sport they are playing will determine where they are sent. Football goes to NAPS.
The student athlete can request a school but CG will have the final say.
Paygrade for cadets is different, but most of the pay does go for school.

No, not all athletes get sent up to NAPS. This year there is about 18 football recruits, 2 male lacrosse recruits, 1 basketball recruit, 2 female track recruits, and one female lacrosse recruit.
- All the CGAS students were given a google form in which we were allowed to select our top three prep school choices. I chose NAPS are my first choice and was luckily given that. Although I do know of students who were not picked for their first choice.
- CGAS students at NAPS are payed the E-2 paygrade. The paycheck are very wealthy and the pay does NOT go towards school.
