Challenges of evaluating from the west coast

SGT Lee,
If your kid is interested in the USCGA, have him look into the AIM summer program. My kid attended last summer and found it very rewarding.

all good advice above. Since your DS is primarily interested in sea service, consider having him screened for color vision next time you are at the eye Dr. It is easy, but not done routinely.
We learned the hard way that having a color vision deficiency makes one a non-starter for Navy, CG and KP, and for CG licenses for civilian maritime careers. Accordingly, my DS is now 'green.'

Also, and please bear with me, but the UNG contact for sports, CoachBart, is that his username in this forum or? From what I can tell, UNG does not offer wrestling and any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!
SGT Lee

I'll msg CoachBart for you and ask him to chime in. He knows all about UNG's wrestling program.

UNG Wrestling

UNG has an NCWA Club Wrestling team. In the sport of wrestling Title IX has decimated NCAA wrestling programs all over the country since the 1970's as schools attempt to come into equality compliance. Over 300 programs have been dropped so that schools can remain in compliance. It's been a devastating blow to a sport that has more participants today at the youth and high school level than ever before and less opportunities to wrestle at the college level than ever before. So as a way to still have wrestling at schools where programs have been dropped or at schools where the female population outnumbers the men population since proportionality is one of the three prongs that must be met, schools like UNG have NCWA teams. The NCWA is an independant organization of schools across the U.S. that compete in tournaments. This years nationals are in Dallas, Tx. UNG wrestling has a facebook page and you can make introductions and find out more about the team there:

Here is the NCWA site:http://www.ncwa.net/

Thank you CoachBart. This was an "eye opener" to say the least and have reviewed with my son. This really helps with keeping UNG in the running so to speak as he'd like to consider wrestling in college. Thanks again!

Thank you JMS for the advice. We took him this weekend for an appt. and phew...no color blindness or any other optical issue. One issue nailed down for the moment :).

California Colleges

Not sure what your son is interested in, but we checked out Cal Maritime near Berkely as one of our son's back-up schools. It is part of the cal-state system. Worth a look.

Blondie - it's definately on the list and probably a back-up as well. To be honest, initial impressions are a little less than favorable but again...that's from afar. Have you visited as of yet? If so...any feedback? My son is also growing increasingly fond of VMI, Nowich, Citadel but at $40k plus in total tuition, he really will need some help if that is to ever be a reality. I really wish there was some way these schools could follow TAMU and UNG with in state tuition. Well, and Cal Maritime feedback would be appreciated.

If your DS is highly qualified, he won't pay sticker price (Norwich). They will offer a competitive price. Have him commo with admissions ASAP if interested.

Yes, BIG merit scholarships at Norwich. Admissions is great - very willing to answer questions and coordinate visits amongst different departments. DS originally awarded a merit scholarship that brought the cost almost to our in-state publics in NY. Ultimately, he accepted 4 yr ROTC scholarship, and Norwich pays Room and Board for their ROTC scholarship winners.

One more on the Norwich band-wagon...

Great school, great corps and more merit money/scholarships/aid than most we looked at. It's hard to imagine that a young person of your son's caliber would not wind up with some very attractive finanical incentives to attend.

Agree on Norwich, which was for DS one of the best things that ever happened to him. He got a great education, many great experiences, many friends and even met his GF there(not part of original package though). Norwich does offer attractive packages for competitive students to be competitive with Publics. Make sure you show interest, communicate often and be early with submissions. As with all schools really should visit if you can despite challenges of distance.

Good Luck

To all Norwich folks...thank you! I really appreciate the info and I've called to schedule an overnight visit and get more info. My son is also in contact with their wrestling coach who is really responsive (and a great guy). Get a really good vibe from Norwich and we actually lived for a few years in NH and traveled to VT on holiday. Still much exploring to do and please keep the feedback coming.

Norwich Leadership Weekend Scheduled...Citadel is on the radar

Thank you again for the feedback relative to Norwich. My son is confirmed for their leadership weekend on 3/28-30. We're going to drop the big bucks and fly out there with him for a day visit then see him off. He is very excited (as our we), the staff there are very accommodating, and hope he as a great experience as this is a significant investment to experience Norwich (from CA). Also hoping that with his grades and "whole person" that we may be afforded some type of merit if he decides to apply (and is accepted). Keeping in touch with the wrestling coach as well who very responsive. MY son also expressed an interest in visiting The Citadel but their non-applicant pre-nob events are over for the year. Darn..wish they had a summer program. Norwich seems to be floating to the top at the moment. Quick sidenote - as parents traveling to VT in late March..whilst our son is at the weekend event, anything to do worth mentioning? Hit Montreal? Thx,

Try to schedule a visit to The Citadel if you can. If your son is competitive for one of the not-uncommon full academic rides we give out, you come here for an interview. We're an excellent school for anyone who wants to commission and wants an SMC experience.

VMI also has several dates left that your son can come spend the night with a rat. The one I attended as a senior in high school is what really sealed the deal for me. I fell in love with the campus and knew it was the only place for me.

I'm currently a rat at VMI so if you have any questions about the school or the application process PM me.

SGT Lee - when we visited Norwich, granted it was a bit warmer, but we visited the area around Waterbury, which is about half hour away. The Green Mountain Coffee factory and visitors center is there (we went there first and they gave us a coupon booklet which had a coupon for ther and also coupons for other places in the area), along with a cider place where you can get a free donut with one of your coupons. There is the Ben and Jerry's factory there, which we did not make it to, a winery and just tons of other places. The folks at the Green Mountain visitor center gave us a map and pointed out lots of places to go. We ran out of time or would have visited more!
The last time my husband took my son up for his overnight, he stayed at the Comfort Inn and Suites, Montpelier, which is convenient to the express way, about 15 min from the school and they give a discount if you tell them you are visiting Norwich. He was pleased with his stay - said they had a nice breakfast.
Of course, you could go skiing! The Stowe area is very close. Good luck!

If you are going to visit Norwich now- plan on freezing your heinie off:eek: ! It is -10 f and the high for the day will be 3!!
