Childhood Asthma?

I had childhood asthma, but outgrew it a while ago. I recently looked at my records, and saw that I wasn't cleared for childhood asthma before 13 years of age. Is this disqualifying for a service academy?

It is a DQ, but it can be waivered, especially if you "outgrew" it. You will likely have to provide Remedials which is typically records related, a pulmonary consult and pulmonary function testing. These tests can vary so I would wait until you get a specific request for what they want. It will depend on if the SA pursues the waiver. Each is different and I believe it can vary from year to year. The only way to know is to walk through the entire process, and provide the remedial as soon as they ask for it. If they ask for it, they will pay for it if you use the provider they give you. There are a lot of posts regarding this if you do a search. Our experience is related to ARMY ROTC, and Son as a 3 year scholarship winner. He is at the end of Freshman year and still waiting to hear about his waiver. The sooner you start the medical review process with DODMERB the better Good luck!

When did your son turn in his AMI’s for the Asthma?

Submitted on 3/14 to Dodmerb. The WA is supposed to have them now. The waiting is difficult. He did not receive his DQ with request for AMI until late January unfortunately. Lots of things that got hung up were out of his control, then long wait for consultation appointment.

As noted by some others, you will need to provide documentation and details. If you are a high school junior, then is not too early to start gathering information, including a visit to your doctor to document your present health around this issue. About 20% of cadets/midshipmen need a medical waiver of some type. My students run along this percentage who typically work with me as they seek a waiver, including childhood asthma. All the best with your pursuits!

I am confused-- this document seems to indicate that if symptoms are not present past age 12 it is not disqualifying https://www.esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/Documents/DD/issuances/dodi/613003_vol1.PDF?ver=7fhqacc0jGX_R9_1iexudA==

Is this the case?
What sometimes happens is RX for inhalers remain on the chart, or sometimes are filled just to have on hand. It can also show up in the medical records as HX "Asthma" with no clear resolution to the problem. If symptoms are not present and there's nothing to suggest they required any treatment past age 12 than it would likely not be a DQ. Some must go through the process of proving to the SA or ROTC that they indeed are symptom free.

My son is a Junior, and 16. We just met with his doctor who officially put on his chart after thorough exam that he no longer has asthma. There were a couple of refills (due to losing them or expiring, not because of use) of inhalers post age 12 to have on hand before we realized that hey- he doesn't have any symptoms or use this ever and hasn't had an asthma episode ever except viral related. Then he decided he was interested in SA's and we wish we'd known sooner to follow up. Fingers crossed he can get a waiver.
