Citadel ROTC program named best in the nation

what does being best mean? What are the criteria?
As a Citadel grad, I dislike these types of posts, as the rankings are mostly subjective. Hard data from DOD indicates most all of the SMCs are among the top five or six schools producing commissioned officers via ROTC, over the most recent 5 year period. So rather than argue about where any Senior Military College ranks, let’s just agree they all have great ROTC programs. This is because they encourage and support cadets in their efforts to commission, and have great academic programs. Athletes can pursue their sport while their ROTC component coordinates their schedules to accommodate absences; great facilities and equipment enable cadets to build their confidence and physical aptitude, and the cadre selected to teach at these schools are usually top notch. And most SMCs now provide financial incentives like room & board waivers to help ROTC scholarship cadets complete their four years without significant financial hardship - which today is a major plus.

The room and board waivers for ROTC scholarship recipients along with the graduate school option, definitely gives The Citadel a leg up over VMI. Hopefully, VMI will follow suit.

I think they will. Since Texas A&M and Norwich did something similar, I feel certain that this is in the works at VMI.

Pretty sure the The Citadel will continue the R&B scholarship offers for 3&4 year National ROTC awardees, as these are subsidized by the Alumni Association. The college is evaluating the Service to Country scholarships for applicants with 3 year National ROTC scholarships. These pay first two semesters of college tuition not covered by the ROTC scholarship.

But what should be concerning for all SMCs is what I understand to be a major change in the AFROTC scholarship program. I have tried to confirm the changes, but have not as of yet. I read on the ROTC forum that going forward, there will be just Type I 4 year awards and these will go largely to Ivy League and a few designated Air Force partner schools. Only other AFROTC scholarships will be awarded to cadets selected for the Advance Course - junior and senior year. They will get full tuition scholarships - for 2 years remaining in college. If someone knows details and/or confirm, would greatly appreciate the information.
