Hi all, I just had a few clarifying questions about The Citadel’s scholarship process, for the Scholars, Honors, 1842 etc.

Are these scholarships awarded on an early/regular board, similar to ROTC scholarships? Or are all applications submitted and results announced in the spring? I’ve read through a few forum posts that said results are usually communicated after January. Also, does anyone have profiles of who is usually selected for these scholarships? I believe the application is invitation-only, but I wasn’t able to find what the average was for the scholarships.

Thanks for any insights.

What I know is second hand, so it is best to speak to an admissions counselor assigned to your state or region. You become eligible for the ROTC incentives (Room & Board for 3 and 4 year awards and first 2 semesters for 3 year awards to high school students) when the Financial Aid Office confirms the award. Yes, high school students who are considered competitive for Academic Merit scholarships are notified by invitation once they have completed their academic applications (including submission of HS transcripts). The winners are typically notified after January as you noted, when the school has a better sense of the pool of applicants. Cannot tell you what the profiles of winners are, as the pool of applicants changes from year to year. You should get to know your Admissions counselor - and also have a discussion with Financial Aid about your individual situation. Be honest and direct in your interest in attending and financial situation. Good luck.

Thank you for the response. I hadn't yet reached out to an Admissions counselor or the Financial Aid department, but I will definitely do so.

Yes, absolutely the best thing you can do is follow up with those colleges you really want to attend. The Citadel will get as many as 5,000 initial applications, but a third or more of those won’t follow up and do the work necessary to complete their admissions packet. More won’t make a connection with an admissions counselor. Remember, colleges are looking for students with sincere interest, and that includes asking questions as well as finishing your application packet. Become a real person by connecting to those making decisions. Sure, there is a fine line between persistence and nuisance, but learn how to to present yourself honestly and this will be helpful whatever college you are applying to. Best of luck.

For The Citadel Scholars Program you have to come to campus and be interviewed then a panel makes the awards. All applications are screened and for those meeting a certain threshold of GPA and SAT the school will try to find you some type of scholarship but many of them are restricted to certain majors or those from certain areas.
